Chapter 6 - The New Boardroom

Three weeks later, across town in the sleek, minimalist glass tower that housed the global headquarters of Vanguard Bio-Pharm, a very different kind of meeting was taking place on the forty-second floor.

The boardroom was filled with senior vice presidents, legal counsels, and major institutional shareholders. The atmosphere was thick with tension. For the last three weeks, the company’s stock price had taken a heavy beating following the public arrest of Cassandra Kelley and the subsequent federal investigation into irregular pharmaceutical trials.

At the head of the long obsidian conference table sat Elijah Sherman.

He didn't look like the panicked, broken man who had carried his son into a hospital emergency room in the pouring rain. He was dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal Brioni suit, his posture rigid, his dark eyes sharp and focused.

"Let’s get straight to the point," Elijah said, his voice cutting cleanly through the nervous murmur of the executives. He pressed a button on the console before him, projecting a clean corporate restructuring document onto the massive smart-screen behind his seat. "Vanguard Bio-Pharm was founded on scientific innovation, not corporate corruption. Under the previous management—and the unauthorized interference of individuals currently facing federal indictment—our R&D pipeline was compromised."

A nervous-looking VP near the center raised his hand. "Elijah... with all due respect, the class-action lawsuits from the delayed clinical trials are going to cost us upwards of forty million dollars by the end of the fiscal year. How do we reassure the board that our biotech division is stable?"

Elijah didn't blink. He reached down, tapped another key on his console, and pulled up a brand-new corporate charter document.

"We don't just reassure them with words. We restructure with integrity," Elijah stated firmly. "Effective immediately, fifty percent of Vanguard Bio-Pharm’s R&D voting shares, along with a controlling endowment fund for pediatric respiratory research, are being transferred into an independent trust."

The boardroom erupted into immediate, chaotic chatter.

"An independent trust?! Whose trust?!" another director demanded, standing up half-way from his chair. "You can't just hand away corporate equity without shareholder approval!"

"It's already approved under the emergency restructuring clause of my majority acquisition rights," Elijah replied coldly, silencing the room with a single, piercing glare. "And the sole trustee and scientific director of this new foundation will be Dr. Naomi Wheeler."

Silence fell over the boardroom like a lead weight.

"Dr. Naomi Wheeler?" the legal counsel stammered, adjusting his glasses. "The former Mrs. Sherman? Elijah, are you out of your mind? She has every legal and personal reason to tear this company apart from the inside out!"

"She has integrity," Elijah corrected sharply, standing up from his chair, resting his palms flat against the obsidian table as he leaned forward. "Which is something this boardroom has been lacking for a very long time. She will audit every single lab, review every clinical trial, and ensure that no experimental compound ever leaves our facilities without absolute ethical clearance."

He looked around the table at the stunned, pale faces of his executives.

"If any one of you has a problem with that," Elijah added quietly, his voice dropping into a dangerous register, "my executive assistant has your resignation letters printed and waiting by the door. Meeting adjourned."
