Chapter 3: The Cold Walls of Justice

Over the next month, the legal battle intensified. Ethan’s defense team tried everything to clear his name, attempting to portray me as a bitter, vengeful ex-wife who was fabricating evidence out of spite.
However, they didn't count on the digital footprints they had left behind. The private investigator I had hired had captured hours of footage of Ethan and Sabrina discussing how to "dispose of Grace's shares" while sitting in luxury restaurants. Even worse for them, the hospital records from the night of the blizzard provided undeniable proof of criminal negligence and child endangerment.
I sat in a secure conference room at David Vance’s law firm, reviewing the latest deposition. Across the table sat Julian Henderson, the son of my father’s old business partner. Julian was an elite corporate attorney who had dropped everything to fly across the country and manage my civil suit against the Caldwell family.
"Ethan’s lawyers are begging for a plea deal, Grace," Julian said, his voice calm and steady. He had an aura of quiet strength that always made me feel grounded. "They know the criminal negligence charge regarding the night he threw you out into the storm will carry a heavy prison sentence alone. If he pleads guilty to the financial fraud, they want the child endangerment charges dropped."
"No," I said firmly, my hands tightening around my coffee mug. "He left a three-day-old infant in a blizzard, Julian. He didn't care if she lived or died. I will not compromise on Sophie’s justice."
Julian looked at me, a soft, deeply respectful smile gracing his features. "I expected you to say that. And don't worry—I won't let them wiggle out of it. We have the 911 call from Mrs. Ramirez and the testimony of the paramedics. Ethan is going away for a very long time."
He reached across the table, his hand gently resting over mine for a brief moment. "How are you holding up, Grace? Truly?"
"I'm sleeping better," I admitted, looking into his warm eyes. "For the first time in years, I don't feel like I'm walking on eggshells. I'm building a life for Sophie where she will never have to doubt her safety."

"You are an incredible mother, Grace," Julian said softly. "And an incredibly strong woman. Your father would be so proud of how you handled this."
The warmth in his voice sent a gentle flutter through my chest—a feeling I hadn't experienced in a long, dark time. For so long, I had been surrounded by wolves disguised as family. Standing next to Julian, I finally remembered what it felt like to have a real ally
