Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Fury

The heavy oak door slid open with a hiss of pneumatic pressure just as Moretti’s men finished setting the timer on the breaching charge.
The sudden movement caught the mercenaries completely off guard.
Before Moretti could raise his weapon, Elise thrust the fire-suppression override remote forward and slammed the emergency button. Instantly, high-pressure chemical foam rained down from the ceiling of the master suite, blinding the mercenaries and filling the air with a dense, impenetrable white cloud.
"What the hell?!" one of the mercenaries shouted, coughing and wiping his eyes frantically.
Elise didn't hesitate. She stepped out into the chaotic foam, raised the heavy flare launcher, and pulled the trigger directly toward the sound of their voices.
BANG!
A blinding, red phosphorus flare erupted into the room, ricocheting off the walls with terrifying heat and light. The intense flare caught the tactical vest of one of the mercenaries, igniting the chemical foam residue and sending the men into a panicked retreat toward the hallway.
"Kill her!" Moretti screamed, his eyes burning from the chemical smoke as he fired a wild burst from his handgun through the haze.
A bullet grazed Elise’s shoulder, tearing through the fabric of her sweater and leaving a burning line of pain along her skin. She gasped, stumbling back into the master bedroom, the pain searing through her arm. She hit the floor hard, dropping the flare launcher as Moretti stepped through the thick smoke, his scarred face twisted in an ugly, triumphant snarl.
He grabbed Elise by her hair, yanking her up off the floor and pinning her against the wall. His gun was pressed hard against her temple.
"Where are the Caruso twins, you little bitch?" Moretti growled, his breath smelling of gunpowder and copper. "Tell me, or I paint this wall with your brains."
Elise squeezed her eyes shut, blood dripping down her arm, but she refused to cry out. She glared back at the ruthless crime lord with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"Go to hell," she spat.
Moretti’s eyes narrowed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Wrong answer."
Before he could pull the trigger, a sound echoed down the corridor—a sound like thunder tearing through the sky.
The heavy mahogany door of the master suite blew off its hinges, crushing the remaining mercenary standing in the hallway. Vincent Caruso strode into the room, his black shirt soaked in blood, his face covered in soot, looking like a demon rising straight from the depths of hell.
"Get your hands off her, Julian," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any emotion.
Moretti spun around, using Elise as a human shield, tightening his grip on her throat while pressing the gun barrel deeper into her head.
"Back off, Caruso!" Moretti screamed, panicked now that his advantage was gone. "One step closer and I blow her head off! Drop your weapons!"
Vincent stopped ten feet away. He didn't drop his gun. His gray eyes flicked to Elise—to the blood soaking her shoulder, to the fierce defiance still burning in her eyes. Something inside Vincent snapped—a complete, catastrophic rupture of the cold restraint he had maintained for years.
"You made two mistakes tonight, Julian," Vincent said softly, taking a single, slow step forward.
"I said stay back!" Moretti yelled, his arm trembling.
"First," Vincent continued, his voice echoing in the foam-covered room, "you broke into my home and threatened my daughters. Second... you put your hands on the woman I love."
Elise’s heart leaped in her chest. The woman I love.
Before Moretti could process the words, Vincent executed a move lightning fast. He raised his secondary firearm—a small, concealed weapon from his ankle holster—and fired two precise shots.
The first bullet struck Moretti’s wrist, shattering the bones and forcing him to drop his gun. The second bullet struck Moretti’s knee, sending the syndicate boss crashing to his floor in a scream of agony.
Elise stumbled free, collapsing into Vincent’s arms as he caught her. He immediately pulled her behind him, stepping over the writhing body of Moretti.
Vincent stood over his fallen rival, his heavy boot pressing down on Moretti’s chest, pinning him to the hardwood floor. Vincent raised his primary weapon, aiming it directly between Moretti’s eyes.
"Vincent, wait!" Marco’s voice called out as he ran into the room, covered in dust, flanked by three surviving Caruso guards. "We need him alive to dismantle his network!"
Vincent didn't lower the gun. His hand was steady, his finger rested on the hair-trigger. He looked down at the man who had ordered the hit that took his wife, the man who had just threatened the woman who brought his children back to life.
"Vincent..."
A soft, trembling voice called out behind him.
Vincent looked back over his shoulder. Elise was standing there, holding her bleeding shoulder, her eyes wide with concern—not for herself, but for him.
"Don't let him take your humanity too," Elise whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "If you kill him in cold blood right now, he wins. Be the man your daughters need."
Vincent stared at her, the dark storm in his eyes raging violently against the quiet, healing light she offered. For several long seconds, the room hung on the edge of a knife.
Slowly, agonizingly, Vincent lowered the gun.
"Take him away," Vincent commanded Marco coldly. "Lock him in the lower cells. Strip his family of every asset they own by sunrise. He will spend the rest of his miserable life in a maximum-security prison."

"Yes, sir!" Marco said, dragging the screaming, bleeding Moretti out of the room.
The moment the room cleared, Vincent turned and swept Elise into his arms, lifting her off her feet despite her injuries, holding her against his chest as if he would never let her go.
