Chapter 9 - Promises in the Sun

Three months after the proposal, the Caruso estate hosted a celebration the city would talk about for years.
It was not a cold, political syndicate event, nor was it an exclusive corporate gathering. The gardens were decorated with thousands of white roses, yellow sunflowers, and fairy lights stringing through the ancient oak trees. Friends, former staff, and trusted allies filled the rows of white chairs facing a beautifully decorated floral arch at the edge of the estate’s lake.
Vincent stood beneath the arch, wearing a sharp, custom navy tuxedo. Standing beside him as his best man was Marco, looking uncharacteristically handsome and clean-shaven, grinning broadly at his boss.
"You nervous, boss?" Marco whispered as the string quartet began to play a gentle, melodious tune.
"Not even a little bit," Vincent replied, his eyes fixed on the path at the end of the aisle. "It's the easiest decision I've ever made."
The music shifted to a breathtaking bridal march.
The guests stood up as the flower girls—Maisie and Rosie, now walking confidently in matching white dresses with yellow sashes—were guided down the aisle by a smiling older nanny whom Elise had personally trained. They tossed yellow rose petals onto the runner, delighted by the applause from the guests.
And then, Elise appeared.
Vincent’s breath left his chest completely. She walked down the aisle on the arm of her father’s lifelong best friend, looking like a dream in an off-the-shoulder, lace wedding gown with a flowing train. She carried a bouquet of wild sunflowers and white roses, her eyes locked onto Vincent’s from the moment she took her first step.
When she reached the arch, Vincent stepped forward, taking her hand gently from her escort.
"You look breathtaking," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Caruso," Elise whispered back, her eyes sparkling with happiness.
The ceremony was intimate, deeply personal, and filled with tears and laughter. When it came time for the vows, Vincent looked directly into Elise’s eyes, holding both of her hands in his.
"Elise," Vincent spoke, his gravelly voice echoing softly across the silent garden. "I spent a long time believing that love was a vulnerability—a weakness that left you exposed to pain. But you showed me that real love is the ultimate strength. You entered a house filled with darkness and grief, and with nothing more than a kind heart and relentless courage, you restored our souls. I promise to protect you, to honor you, and to spend every single day of my life making sure you and our daughters know how deeply you are cherished."
Elise wiped a stray tear from her cheek, smiling radiantly as she spoke her own vows.
"Vincent," she said softly. "I fell in love with your fierce loyalty, your devotion to your daughters, and the noble heart you tried so hard to hide from the world. You gave me a home, a purpose, and a family to love with all my heart. I promise to stand beside you in light and in darkness, to laugh with you through every storm, and to never, ever let you forget how much joy you deserve."

"By the power vested in me," the officiant announced with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Vincent didn't wait a second longer. He wrapped his arms around Elise’s waist, pulling her flush against him and kissing her with all the passion, devotion, and love in his soul. The crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause, while the twins babbled happily from the front row.
