Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The administrative boardroom of St. Jude’s Academy was a masterclass in architectural opulence. High, vaulted ceilings of polished cherry wood, stained-glass windows depicting the school's historical patrons, and a massive mahogany table that had once belonged to an English duke.

But today, the room felt like a golden cage.

Ten members of the Board of Trustees sat around the table, their expensive suits and designer dresses suddenly looking like cheap costumes under the cold, clinical light of my security team’s tactical flashlights. Marcus’s men stood positioned at every exit, their arms crossed, their expressions unreadable.

At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling, a billionaire hedge-fund manager whose name was plastered on half the buildings in the city. Beside him was Helena Vance-Croft, my cousin, her face a mask of elegant fury, her fingers clutching her pearl necklace so tightly her knuckles were white.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, and I walked in, still wearing my gray cleaning uniform, with Lily standing proudly at my side.

Helena let out a sharp, aristocratic laugh. "Victoria, really. This theatrical display is beneath you. Disguising yourself as a member of the sanitation staff? Staging a dramatic revelation at a high school graduation? You’ve always had a flair for the ridiculous, but this is a new low."

"The cleaning uniform was to ensure I could walk your halls without your corrupt headmaster clearing his hard drives, Helena," I said, walking to the head of the table and placing my canvas bag on the polished wood. "And it worked. I have everything. The exam tampering, the grade-fixing, the financial kickbacks... and the sub-basement server room."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Richard Sterling tried to bluster, standing up and smoothing his tailored jacket. "Now see here, Hartwell! My daughter, Penelope, is a brilliant student! She didn't need to cheat! Collins came to me with a proposal to ensure her placement at Yale. It was a standard philanthropic transaction! We donate to the school, the school ensures our children's success. That’s how the world works!"

"No, Richard," Lily said, stepping forward, her voice ringing clear and true. "That’s how your world works. You buy your way through life because you’re terrified your children can't compete on their own merit. Penelope didn't cheat because she wanted to. She cheated because you forced her to. She stood on that stage and apologized to me because she has a conscience. Which is clearly something you lacked the money to buy."

Sterling’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. "You little—"

"Sit down, Richard," I commanded, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal authority that made him freeze. "You have exactly thirty minutes before your daughter’s academic career, your hedge fund’s reputation, and your freedom are permanently extinguished. I know about the Aegis Group. I know about the cognitive data-harvesting. And I know about the three-key cryptographic protocol."

Helena leaned forward, her eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "You think you can threaten us, Victoria? The Aegis Group is backed by some of the most powerful sovereign wealth funds in the world. You may have the Hartwell Trust, but you are playing in a league that can erase you from the global market overnight. If you disrupt this data transmission, your foundation’s assets will be frozen by international regulators before the sun rises."

"I don't care about the international regulators, Helena," I said, leaning over the table, my face inches from hers. "Because I don't just own the Hartwell Trust. I own the physical infrastructure of this school. I own the land. I own the dark fiber lines you’re using to transmit that data. And if you don't hand over the cryptographic keys right now, I’m going to physically sever the cables and bury this entire school in a mountain of litigation that will take your grandchildren forty years to climb out of."
