Chapter 7 - The Master Key

The silence that followed Lily's words was heavier than the stone walls of the tower.

Julian stood on the stairs, his tablet hovering over his hands, the blue light reflecting in his eyes. On the screen behind him, the transmission bar continued its steady, uncaring climb.

Transmission Progress: 89%

"A father..." Julian muttered, a hollow, bitter laugh escaping his lips. "Victoria took that chance away from me ten years ago when she stripped me of my parental rights and banished me from your life."

"I did it because you were mapping her infant sleep cycles to design a commercial marketing algorithm, Julian!" I shouted, my voice raw with anger. "You didn't want a daughter; you wanted a test subject!"

"It was optimization!" he yelled back, his composure finally cracking. "I was trying to make her perfect!"

"She is already perfect!" I screamed, grabbing the iron bars of the gate. "Look at her! She’s the valedictorian of this school because she worked herself to the bone! She didn't need your algorithms, and she didn't need your stolen exams! She did it on her own! And you tried to ruin her just to prove your sick theories!"

Julian looked down at Lily. She stood there, her head held high, the gold valedictorian medal resting against her chest, her eyes bright with tears but filled with an unyielding, fierce dignity.

She wasn't a product of his design. She was a living, breathing testament to her own strength.

A quiet, mechanical beep chimed from Julian’s tablet.

Transmission Progress: 95%

"It's too late anyway, Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping to a weary whisper. "The Aegis Group already has the encryption protocol. Once it hits one hundred, the transfer is automated. Even I can't stop it from my console without the master override code."

"Then give me the code, Julian," I pleaded, my voice softening, reaching through the cold iron bars. "Let her go. Let our daughter be free."

Julian looked at the tablet, then at Lily.

"The master override..." he whispered. "It's the only thing I never changed."

"What is it?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"October 14th," Lily whispered suddenly, stepping beside me.

I looked at her, confused. "Lily?"

"The day we went to the natural history museum when I was six," Lily said, her eyes locked onto her father's. "Before the divorce. You told me the stars in the planetarium were beautiful because they were chaotic, because nobody could ever predict exactly where they would fall. You said that was the secret of the universe: beautiful chaos."

Julian’s breath hitched. A tear slipped down his weathered cheek, catching the blue light of the screen.

"Beautiful... chaos," he whispered.

He typed rapidly into his tablet.

On the smart-board in the corridor, the progress bar suddenly froze at 99%. A massive, red warning box flashed on the screen:

TRANSMISSION ABORTED. USER OVERRIDE INITIATED. PURGING SYSTEM DATABASE.

"No!" Helena's voice screamed from the boardroom speakers. "Julian! What are you doing? You’ve ruined us!"

The hum of the massive server racks in the sub-basement began to pitch down, a dying, mechanical groan as the cooling fans spun to a halt and the data streams were permanently erased.
