Three days later, she filed.
Full custody petition.
Claimed I had “interfered with parental rights.”
Claimed “temporary caregiving overreach.”
Claimed she had been “actively maintaining contact.”
None of it was true.
But truth doesn’t win on its own.
Evidence does.
And Emily always had one advantage:
she knew how to sound believable.
My lawyer, Mr. Callahan, didn’t panic.
He just said one thing:
“She’s going to frame you as emotional interference.”
I nodded.
“What do we do?”
He looked at me.
“We don’t argue her story.”
A pause.
“We replace it.”
That’s when I started gathering everything.
Hospital records when Ethan had pneumonia.
School enrollment logs I had signed.
Neighbor statements.
Daycare records.
Utility bills I paid.
Doctor visits I handled.
Ten years of invisible motherhood that I never called mine.
Because I thought it was temporary.
That was my mistake.
And then Callahan asked:
“Do you have anything that shows abandonment directly?”
I hesitated.
Then said:
“No.”
He nodded.
“That’s fine.”
