CHAPTER 4 — THE NIGHT SHE DIDN’T KNOW WAS RECORDED

The witness came from a bar.

Not mine.

Not Emily’s.

A random establishment she frequented during her “off periods.”

Callahan found it through financial patterns—withdrawals near that location, repeated timestamps, recurring charges.

We didn’t know what we would find.

Until we saw the footage.

Emily entered at 11:47 p.m.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Completely unburdened.

A man asked her about her kids.

She waved it off.

“They’re fine,” she said.

A pause.

“They’ve got my sister playing mommy anyway.”

Laughter from the table.

Someone asked if she missed them.

She took a sip of her drink.

Then said:

“I didn’t sign up for that life full-time.”

That was the moment the room changed.

Because even the people around her stopped smiling.

The recording continued.

A friend asked if she planned to go back.

Emily leaned back in her chair.

“Eventually,” she said.

A pause.

“When it’s useful again.”

Silence in the courtroom would later mirror that exact moment.
