Chapter 4 - The Pressure Point

Sarah backed up slowly against the metal lockers, clutching her bruised wrist. She calculated her options rapidly: three armed hostiles, no gun, blocked exit, and Lena hiding somewhere behind the storage crates thirty yards away.
"It's over, Pike," Sarah said, keeping her voice steady to buy time. "Vancevich is in state custody right now. He’s already talking."
Pike’s eye twitched slightly, but he forced a harsh laugh. "Vance is a professional. He won't say a word. And even if he does, who do you think the District Attorney is going to believe? A decorated philanthropist like Mr. Pendelton, or a rogue detective who broke into a private business without a warrant?"
"I have the execution order, Gordon," Sarah said, glancing down at the hard case still sitting open in the locker. "Signed by Pendelton himself. Along with Michael Carter’s murder logs and the USB drive detailing your multi-million-dollar food theft scheme."
Pike’s face turned white. The smugness drained from his expression, replaced by sheer panic. He turned to the two security guards. "Get that case! Burn everything in it! Kill her and throw her body in the incinerator!"
Before the guards could raise their weapons, a loud, piercing screech echoed through the basement.
Lena had driven a heavy electric forklift out from behind a storage aisle, driving it at top speed directly into the side of the steel shelving units above the guards.
CRASH!
Hundreds of pounds of heavy wooden pallets, metal display stands, and canned goods came cascading down like a mechanical avalanche, burying the two security guards beneath a mountain of debris and metal.
"Run, Detective!" Lena screamed over the roar of the collapsing shelves.
Pike lunged toward Sarah with the tire iron. Sarah ducked beneath his wild swing, slammed her shoulder into his ribs, and swept his heavy legs out from under him. Pike hit the concrete floor hard, knocking the wind out of his lungs.
Sarah grabbed the waterproof hard case from locker B-14, grabbed her fallen Glock from under the shelf, and grabbed Lena by the arm.
"To the alley! Move!" Sarah yelled.
They burst through the rear service door into the pouring rain just as the sirens began to wail in the distance. Marcus Vance had delivered. Three state police cruisers swung into the alleyway, headlights cutting through the storm, blocking all exits.
State troopers poured out of their vehicles, weapons drawn. "State Police! Nobody move!"
Gordon Pike stumbled out of the service door, coughing, covered in dust and blood, holding his side. He raised his hands instantly as red laser sights covered his chest.
Sarah stepped up to him, holding the black hard case securely under her arm. She pulled out her handcuffs and snapped them onto Pike’s wrists with a satisfying metallic click.
"Gordon Pike, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder," Sarah said clearly into his ear.
Pike looked at her with hollow, defeated eyes. "Pendelton will kill me in jail," he whimpered.
"If you're lucky," Sarah replied coldly. "Because if I have my way, you're going to spend the rest of your life staring at four grey walls."
She handed Pike over to the state troopers and turned to Lena, who was shivering under the awning. Sarah pulled her own leather coat off and wrapped it around the young cashier's shoulders.
"You saved my life back there, Lena," Sarah said softly.
Lena smiled weakly, wiping rain from her eyes. "Michael Carter was a good man, Detective. He used to slip extra bread to the families who couldn't afford it. When Mr. Pike fired him, we all knew something bad was happening. I just couldn't stay quiet anymore."

"Your courage is going to give his family their life back," Sarah said.
She turned to her radio. "Marcus, this is Mitchell. Primary suspect Gordon Pike is in custody. Secure evidence retrieved. I am heading to St. Jude’s Hospital to secure Emily and Noah Carter before Pendelton realizes his operation has collapsed."
