Chapter 5 - The Hospital Siege

The rain showed no sign of stopping as Sarah’s cruiser raced through the city streets toward St. Jude Memorial Hospital. The black hard case sat safely in the passenger seat beside her, but Sarah knew the hardest battle was still ahead.
Arthur Pendelton was not a petty criminal like Pike. He was a billionaire with deep political connections, private security forces, and control over city infrastructure. When a man like Pendelton was cornered, he wouldn't run—he would cut off every head that could testify against him.
When Sarah arrived at St. Jude’s, the lobby was unusually quiet. The night shift security guard at the front desk was missing.
Sarah drew her weapon immediately, her instincts screaming warning signals. She skipped the elevators and took the emergency stairwell three steps at a time, heading straight for the fourth-floor maternity ward.
As she pushed through the heavy double doors of the fourth floor, she saw Officer Davis—the guard she had left to protect Emily’s room—lying motionless on the floor near the nurse’s station.
"Davis!" Sarah ran to him, checking his pulse. He was breathing, but a deep bruise on the back of his neck indicated he had been struck from behind with a heavy blunt object.
Down the hallway, room 412’s door was standing half-open.
Sarah moved down the corridor silently, her gun raised, hugging the wall.
Inside room 412, Emily Carter was sitting on the hospital bed, holding Noah tight against her chest. Standing at the foot of her bed was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke three-piece navy suit. His posture was impeccably refined, holding a gold-topped walking cane in his gloved right hand.
It was Arthur Pendelton.
Behind him stood two armed men dressed in dark tactical gear, carrying concealed weapons under their jackets.
"Mrs. Carter," Pendelton was saying in a smooth, cultured baritone that dripped with condescending warmth. "You must understand that I am a reasonable man. Your husband was... an unfortunate casualty of a miscommunication. I am prepared to set up a trust fund for your son and your unborn child—five million dollars, completely tax-free—provided you sign a statement admitting that Michael was acting alone in the theft scheme."
Emily held Noah tighter, her face pale but her eyes burning with an incredible, defiant fury. "My husband was an honest man. You murdered him."
Pendelton sighed, rubbing his temples as if dealing with a stubborn child. "Truth is a luxury for people who can afford it, Mrs. Carter. You have no money, no home, an eight-year-old child, and a baby on the way. If you refuse my generosity, I'm afraid your family's tragic streak will simply... continue."
"Put your hands where I can see them, Pendelton!"
Sarah stepped into the doorway, her Glock locked onto Pendelton’s chest.
The two tactical guards turned instantly, drawing their silenced pistols, but Sarah fired two quick shots into the wall above their heads, the loud report echoing violently in the small hospital room.
"Move an inch and you die right here, Pendelton!" Sarah shouted, her eyes fixed on the CEO. "State troopers have already raided Community Market. Gordon Pike is singing like a canary, and I have the original execution order with your signature on it!"
Pendelton didn't flinch. He slowly turned around, looking at Sarah with mild amusement. "Ah, Detective Mitchell. The crusade ends here, I suppose?"
"It ends with you in handcuffs."
Pendelton raised his walking cane slightly. "Do you really think a piece of paper and the word of a sniveling store manager can destroy me? I built this city's charity network. I fund the police department's pension plan. I am friends with the governor. A phone call from me will have that evidence lost in transit before sunrise."
"Try calling him now," a new voice echoed from the hallway.
District Attorney Eleanor Vance stepped into the room, surrounded by six armed State Police tactical officers with heavy body armor and rifles aimed directly at Pendelton’s men.
"Your phone lines have been tapped for the last two hours, Arthur," DA Vance said coldly, holding up a federal warrant. "The State Supreme Court just signed a master warrant for your arrest, your corporate holdings, and all Aegis assets. Drop the cane."
Pendelton’s calm facade shattered in a single fraction of a second. The color drained completely from his face. His hand trembled as the gold-topped cane slipped from his grip, clattering uselessly onto the linoleum floor.
"Disarm them," Vance ordered her officers.
The state troopers swarmed the room, tackling Pendelton’s guards to the floor and slamming the billionaire CEO against the medical wall monitors.
"You can't do this to me!" Pendelton roared, his voice cracking with unhinged fury as heavy steel cuffs were slapped around his wrists. "I own this city! I own all of you!"
"Not anymore," Sarah said, stepping aside as troopers hauled him out into the corridor.
The room fell into a profound, peaceful silence.

Sarah turned to Emily and Noah. Emily collapsed back against her pillows, crying tears of overwhelming relief, clutching Noah as he hugged her neck tightly.
"It's over, Emily," Sarah said gently, walking over to the bed and taking her hand. "Michael's name is clean. You're safe now."
