The morning sun cast a golden glow over the Manhattan skyline, painting the soaring glass towers of the financial district and the historic brownstones of the Upper East Side in brilliant shades of amber and rose.
On the roof terrace of Calloway Enterprises—now officially renamed the Calloway-Bennett Environmental Trust Headquarters—a small, intimate gathering of friends, colleagues, and city officials had gathered to celebrate the official opening of the new municipal sustainability initiative.
At the center of the terrace stood a bronze plaque mounted on a granite pillar. The inscription read:
“True leadership is measured not by the heights of our towers, but by the cleanliness of our conscience and the protection of our communities.”
Grace stood beside the pillar, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green dress that contrasted sharply with the fluorescent-green vest she had once worn with such fierce pride. The vest itself—framed in glass—hung proudly on the wall of the corporate lobby downstairs, a permanent reminder of where true integrity begins.
Ethan walked up beside her, holding a small velvet box in his hand. The city hummed below them with the vibrant, unstoppable energy of millions of lives moving forward, safe, protected, and renewed.
"Penny for your thoughts, Commissioner Bennett," Ethan whispered, slipping his arm around her waist.
Grace looked out over the skyline, breathing in the clean, crisp autumn air. She smiled, resting her head against his shoulder. "I was just thinking that Manhattan has a lot of recycling bins, Ethan. And I wonder what else we might find if we look close enough."
Ethan laughed softly, kissing the top of her head as he opened the velvet box to reveal a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a band shaped like a delicate, intertwined vine of gold and green.
"Whatever we find next," Ethan said, looking into her eyes with a deep, unwavering devotion, "I want to sort through it with you for the rest of my life."
