Chapter 4 - The Public Unveiling

The news of the broken engagement was only the beginning of the storm.
Vanessa Cole was not a woman who suffered humiliation quietly. Spurred by rage and humiliation, she went on a scorched-earth media tour. Within three days, she appeared on several high-profile entertainment news shows, painting herself as the victim of a ruthless, mentally unstable billionaire.
“Adrien Hastings turned on me overnight,” Vanessa sobbed fake tears into a silk tissue during a nationally broadcast interview. “He chose a manipulative maid over his own fiancée. This woman, Rosa Delgado, ambushed us at our engagement party. She’s been trying to seduce Adrien for months, using her illegitimate child to gain sympathy. It’s a classic gold-digger trap, and Adrien fell right into it!”
The media exploded. Paparazzi ambushed the gates of the Hastings estate, hovering in helicopters and blocking the driveway with long-lens cameras. The tabloids branded Rosa a “social-climbing maid” and labeled Mia an “anchor baby.”
Inside the estate, Rosa watched the television news with mounting horror.
“They’re destroying my name,” Rosa whispered, her voice shaking as she stood in Adrien’s study. “They’re calling Mia names, Adrien. The whole world thinks I’m a whore who trapped you!”
Adrien stood behind his desk, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. “Let them talk for one more day, Rosa. Vanessa is digging her own grave.”
“How can you be so calm?!” Rosa cried. “She’s running my reputation into the ground!”
“Because,” Adrien said, walking around his desk and holding Rosa by her shoulders, looking directly into her eyes, “tomorrow, we control the narrative. Tomorrow, the world finds out who Mia really is.”
The next afternoon, Adrien called a emergency press conference at the Hastings Plaza Auditorium in downtown Chicago. Over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and network reporters crammed into the hall. The air was electric with anticipation; everyone expected Adrien to announce a lawsuit or issue a dry corporate defense.
At precisely 2:00 PM, Adrien stepped onto the stage. He was wearing a dark, impeccably tailored suit.
He didn’t walk alone.
Holding his right hand was Rosa Delgado, dressed in an elegant, emerald-green silk dress, her hair styled in soft waves. And holding Rosa’s other hand was little Mia, wearing a beautiful yellow sundress, her shortened hair neatly trimmed and styled with a cute silver headband.
The auditorium erupted into a frenzy of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters.
Adrien raised his hand, demanding silence. Instantly, the room fell quiet.
“For the past seventy-two hours,” Adrien spoke into the array of microphones, his voice echoing with absolute authority, “certain individuals have used the media to spread vicious lies about my family and the people I protect.”
He reached down and gently picked up Mia, holding her securely against his chest. Mia looked at the flashing cameras with curious, calm eyes, feeling entirely safe in her uncle’s arms.
“Miss Vanessa Cole went on national television and claimed that Rosa Delgado is an opportunistic stranger,” Adrien continued, his tone cold and cutting. “She claimed that this child was a tool used to manipulate me. Today, I am here to set the record completely straight.”
Adrien pointed to the massive LED screen behind him. An image flashed up. It was a certified medical document alongside a official DNA paternity and lineage report from the city’s top forensic laboratory.
“This is Mia Hastings-Delgado,” Adrien announced, his voice booming through the auditorium. “She is not a stranger. She is the biological daughter of my late sister, Elena Hastings.”
Gasps rang out across the hall. Journalists scrambled to type frantically on their laptops.
“Three years ago, my sister went into hiding to protect her unborn child from a dangerous situation,” Adrien explained. “Rosa Delgado was my sister’s closest, most loyal friend. When Elena tragically passed away, Rosa took on the burden of protecting my niece. She sacrificed her own life, her own comfort, and her own reputation to raise my sister’s child in safety. She worked in my home, putting her own pride aside, just to keep Mia near her family.”
Adrien looked directly into the primary news camera, his eyes burning with promise.
“Rosa Delgado is not a servant. She is a hero. She is family. And as of today, Mia is officially recognized as an heir to the Hastings estate, holding a fifty percent stake in our family trust.”
The room went wild with questions, but Adrien wasn’t finished.
“Furthermore,” Adrien added, his tone sharpening, “my legal team has filed a twenty-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Vanessa Cole and Cole Enterprises for slander, emotional distress, and public harassment. Any news outlet that continues to print lies about my niece or Rosa Delgado will face immediate, aggressive legal action.”
Adrien turned, took Rosa’s arm, and walked off the stage, holding Mia tightly.
Backstage, Rosa collapsed against a wall, tears streaming down her face—not of fear, but of profound relief. The shame was gone. The secret was out.

Adrien set Mia down and looked at Rosa. “I told you I’d protect you.”
Rosa looked up at him, her heart skipping a strange, unexpected beat as she looked into his deep brown eyes. “Thank you, Adrien. You gave us our lives back.”
