Chapter 10 - The Happy Cake (Conclusion)

A year later.

The Connecticut mansion was buzzing with life and joyful noise. Balloons in shades of pink, gold, and white decorated the grand foyer, and the smell of sweet icing filled the air.

It was Sofia’s fourth birthday.

Friends, family, and neighbors gathered in the spacious, newly renovated drawing room. Light blue drapes fluttered in the afternoon breeze, and laughter echoed throughout the bright estate.

In the center of the kitchen island, where a tragic mess of spilled flour and crushed eggshells had once been scattered, sat a magnificent, four-tiered chocolate cake.

Sofia, wearing a tiny silver tiara and a birthday dress, stood on a brand-new wooden step stool. She had frosting smudged on both of her cheeks, looking remarkably similar to the little girl Ethan had encountered in that very kitchen sixteen months prior.

"Alright, birthday girl," Ethan smiled, standing right beside her, wearing a comfortable knit sweater with his sleeves rolled up. "Are you ready to blow out your candles?"

"Wait!" Sofia insisted loudly, holding up a finger. "Mommy needs to be here!"

Maria walked into the kitchen, looking breathtaking in a cream-colored dress, her dark curls falling softly around her shoulders. She stepped up to the island, leaning against Ethan’s shoulder. Ethan wrapped a loving arm around her waist, pulling her close and kissing her hair gently.

Over the past year, their bond had grown into a deep, enduring love. They were no longer just survivors of past pain—they were a family, bound together by choice, devotion, and shared joy.

"Okay, Sofia," Maria laughed softly, snapping a photo with her camera. "Make a big wish!"

Sofia closed her brown eyes tight, took a deep breath, and blew out all four candles in one big puff. The room erupted into cheers and applause.

"What did you wish for, sweetie?" one of the guests asked.

Sofia looked up at Ethan, then at Maria, her face beaming with pure, unadulterated happiness.

"I didn't need to wish for anything!" Sofia declared proudly, holding her hands out wide. "Because Mr. Cole already fixed our hearts!"

The guests laughed and clapped, but Ethan and Maria looked at each other, their eyes filling with happy tears.

Ethan leaned down, lifting Sofia into his arms, while keeping his other arm tightly around Maria. He looked across the sunlit kitchen, his eyes briefly pausing on the small silver picture frame resting quietly on the mantle—where Rachel’s photograph smiled warmly down upon them, bathed in sunlight.

There were no more dark rooms in the house. No more silence, no more cold towers of isolation.

Ethan Cole had finally come home.
