Chapter 4 - A Unexpected Guest

Later that week, Ethan returned to his Connecticut mansion earlier than usual again. The silence that used to crush him was now broken by the gentle sounds of life.
As he walked into the foyer, he heard soft music playing from the drawing room. He stepped over quietly and saw Maria sitting on the couch with a laptop, her eyebrows furrowed in stress as she looked through medical forms. Sofia was on the carpet nearby, playing with a set of wooden building blocks Ethan had ordered for her earlier that week.
"Maria," Ethan called softly.
Maria jumped up, quickly shutting her laptop. "Mr. Cole! I’m sorry, I was just checking my email during Sofia’s downtime—"
"Relax," Ethan said, stepping into the room. He handed her an envelope. "This is from Sterling & Associates."
Maria opened the envelope with trembling fingers. As she read the official document detailing the fully funded trust for Sofia’s heart surgery and education, her hands began to shake violently. Tears pooled in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks.
"This... this can't be real," Maria whispered, looking up at him in disbelief. "Mr. Cole... $250,000 for the surgery? An education fund? I... I can't accept this. It's too much."
"It's already done, Maria," Ethan said firmly but gently. "The medical team at New York-Presbyterian has been booked for next month. Dr. Harrison, the top pediatric cardiologist in the state, will lead the team."
Maria sank back onto the sofa, sobbing softly into her hands—tears of overwhelming relief. "I've prayed every night for a miracle... I didn't know how I was going to save her."
Sofia ran over, pulling on her mother's skirt. "Mommy, why are you crying? Is Mr. Cole being mean?"
Maria quickly wiped her tears and pulled Sofia into a tight hug. "No, sweetie. Mr. Cole is... he's our angel."
Ethan turned his head away, uncomfortable with the praise, but a deep sense of purpose washed over him. For three years, he had believed his wealth was meaningless—just numbers on a screen that couldn't bring back the people he loved. For the first time, he saw that his power could protect someone else's fragile world.
"Sofia," Ethan said, kneeling down to the toddler's eye level. "How would you like to help me fix a room upstairs?"
Sofia’s eyes lit up. "A secret room?"
"Sort of," Ethan murmured.
For the next two hours, Ethan, Maria, and Sofia worked in the nursery across from his bedroom. Together, they dusted off the shelves and carefully unpacked the wooden crib that had sat in its box for three years. Sofia handed Ethan the screws and wooden pegs with extreme seriousness, treating it like a vital mission.
By evening, the crib stood fully assembled in the center of the brightly lit room. The dark cloud that had hung over the door for three years seemed to dissolve, replaced by the innocent chatter of a child.
However, as Ethan stood in the hallway looking into the room, his phone rang. It was an unlisted private number.
Ethan answered. "Ethan Cole."
"Mr. Cole," a raspy, unfamiliar voice said on the line. "You should be careful who you welcome into your home. Not everyone who cleans your floors is as innocent as she claims."
Ethan’s posture instantly went rigid. "Who is this?"

"Check Maria Alvarez’s history before you hand over your trust," the voice chuckled dryly. "Ask her about her ex-husband, Hector Delgado. And ask why he just got out of state prison three days ago."
The call clicked dead.
