📖 CHAPTER 5 — The Brother Behind the Wheel

The east corridor cameras flickered once.

Then stabilized.

And Ethan Kincaid walked into the heart of his brother’s empire like he still belonged there.

No disguise.

No hesitation.

Just a man returning to a house that had once been his almost as much as Dominic’s.

Security alarms should have been screaming.

They weren’t.

Miles checked the system twice, fingers flying across the console.

“It’s not triggering intrusion protocol,” he muttered.

Dominic didn’t take his eyes off the screen.

“That’s because he has access,” Dominic said quietly.

Claire turned sharply. “Access? To your estate?”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“To my past.”

Noah was staring at the screen now.

Not afraid.

Not surprised.

Just… waiting.

Like he had already seen this moment before.

Claire knelt beside him. “Noah, don’t look at that. Come on, let’s go—”

The boy didn’t move.

But his fingers slowly curled into her sleeve again.

Not panic this time.

Control.

Claire felt it immediately.

He wasn’t reacting to Ethan.

He was confirming him.

Ethan stopped in the main hall.

Looked around.

Smiled slightly.

Like he was admiring a museum exhibit.

Then he spoke.

And his voice carried through the speakers.

“Dom.”

Dominic didn’t answer.

Ethan continued anyway.

“You still keeping the place cold? Miranda always hated that.”

The name hit the room like a blade sliding under skin.

Claire saw Dominic’s shoulders tense—but he still didn’t move.

Miles whispered, “He’s bypassed internal audio control.”

Dominic finally spoke.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Ethan chuckled softly.

“I live here, brother. Just not physically anymore.”

A pause.

Then—

“I heard my nephew is talking again.”

Claire felt Noah stiffen beside her.

Ethan’s voice softened.

“That’s new.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Stay where you are.”

Ethan stopped walking.

Smiled wider.

“You always were dramatic.”

Then his eyes shifted.

And landed on the security feed camera.

As if he could see through it.

Directly into the room.

“Hello, Noah.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Noah did not respond.

But something changed in his expression.

Subtle.

Almost invisible.

Recognition.

Claire felt it.

Miles felt it too.

Dominic noticed.

And that was worse than everything else.

Ethan walked again.

Slow.

Unbothered.

“Funny thing about memory,” he said casually. “It doesn’t stay buried just because you want it to.”

Dominic’s voice sharpened. “Stop talking.”

Ethan ignored him.

“I wonder,” Ethan continued, “if he remembers the sound of the tires… or just the silence after.”

Claire felt cold spread through her chest.

Miles stepped closer to Dominic. “Boss… we should shut down the corridor cameras.”

Dominic didn’t respond.

Because Noah had just spoken.

Very softly.

One word.

“Blood.”

Claire turned instantly. “Noah?”

The boy blinked once.

Then again.

Like waking from something deeper than sleep.

And then—

he whispered:

“Uncle was driving.”

Silence hit harder this time.

Because it wasn’t repeated from the system anymore.

It came from him.

Dominic’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Something more dangerous.

Understanding.

Ethan stopped walking in the hallway.

Like he had heard it too.

Then he smiled.

“Good,” he said softly. “He remembers.”

Miles snapped, “He’s manipulating the system—cut external feed now.”

But Dominic raised his hand.

“Wait.”

Miles froze.

Dominic stared at the screen.

At his brother.

At his son.

At the truth forming between them like a fracture widening in glass.

“Ethan,” Dominic said slowly, “what did you do?”

Ethan exhaled like he had been waiting years for that question.

“I did what you couldn’t.”

Silence.

Then Ethan continued.

“I protected the family.”

Claire whispered, “Protected… by killing her?”

The hallway feed went quiet.

Ethan didn’t deny it.

That was the answer.

Noah suddenly stepped away from Claire.

One step.

Then another.

Claire reached for him instantly. “Noah, no—stay here—”

But the boy was already moving toward the console again.

Miles reacted immediately. “He’s accessing deeper layers again—how is he doing this?”

Dominic watched without stopping him.

Because something in him already knew.

Noah wasn’t hacking the system.

He was remembering it.

The screen changed.

New file.

Deeper archive.

CLASSIFIED — MIRANDA KINCAID INCIDENT: FULL TRACE

Miles went rigid. “That file doesn’t exist in live system—”

Then it opened.

Video.

Clearer this time.

Not corrupted.

Not fragmented.

Complete.

A second car.

A driver.

A familiar face.

Ethan Kincaid.

Claire gasped.

“No…”

Dominic didn’t move.

But his hand tightened slowly at his side.

Noah paused the video.

Looked at it.

Then at Ethan’s live feed.

Then whispered:

“You lied.”

Ethan’s smile faded slightly.

Just slightly.

But it did fade.

Dominic stepped forward toward the console.

His voice was low.

Dangerous.

“Why, Ethan?”

Silence on the line.

Then Ethan spoke again.

But the tone had changed.

Less playful.

More precise.

“Because she was going to tell you.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Miles went still.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Tell me what?”

Ethan paused.

Then said:

“About the transfer.”

Claire blinked. “What transfer?”

Dominic turned sharply toward her.

For the first time, he looked like a man realizing something was missing from his own life.

Ethan’s voice continued.

“The night she died… she had the documents.”

Miles whispered, “What documents?”

Dominic didn’t answer.

Because now he knew.

And Claire saw it in his face.

A realization forming too large to stop.

Noah suddenly covered his ears.

Claire moved instantly. “Noah!”

But the boy wasn’t reacting to sound.

He was reacting to memory.

His breathing quickened.

Images flickering behind his eyes that no child should carry.

Claire knelt. “Hey—look at me—stay with me, okay?”

Noah whispered again.

But this time, it wasn’t one word.

It was a sentence.

Broken.

Fragile.

Final.

“Mommy didn’t leave.”

Silence.

Then:

“She was taken.”

Dominic closed his eyes for half a second.

Just half.

But it was enough.

Because when he opened them again—

something inside him had changed.

Ethan’s voice softened.

“You see, Dom… she was never in the car alone.”

Claire felt ice crawl through her spine.

Miles whispered, “Boss…”

But Dominic was already walking toward the screen.

“Shut it down,” he said quietly.

Ethan’s final words came through before the feed cut.

“You should’ve asked me sooner.”

Then—

static.

Silence.

And the estate went quiet again.

But not peaceful.

Never peaceful.

Because Noah Kincaid, the boy who hadn’t spoken in years, slowly turned his head toward his father.

And said the last thing anyone expected.

Not a word.

Not a fragment.

A full sentence.

Clear.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

“You knew.”

Dominic didn’t answer.

Because for the first time in his life—

May you like

he wasn’t sure if the truth would save his son.

Or destroy what was left of him.
