📖 CHAPTER 6 — The War Inside the Mansion

By dawn, the Kincaid estate no longer felt like a home.
It felt like a sealed vault waiting for something inside it to explode.
Every corridor was controlled. Every exit monitored. Every camera re-routed to Miles Archer’s command console. The mansion’s marble elegance now served a darker purpose—visibility. Nothing could move unseen anymore.
Except the truth.
The truth was already moving.
Claire hadn’t slept.
Not really.
She sat on the edge of the guest room bed, watching Noah breathe. The boy was finally still again, curled against the stuffed fox, one hand lightly gripping her sleeve as if even unconscious he refused to lose contact.
On the fox’s ear, the stitched letters felt heavier now.
C K I.
Claire traced them with her eyes.
Not a brand.
Not decoration.
A mark.
A signature.
Something inside her told her that this wasn’t just about Miranda Kincaid anymore.
It never had been.
A soft knock broke the silence.
Miles Archer entered without waiting for permission.
That alone told Claire everything.
Something had escalated.
“Boss wants you in the study,” Miles said.
Claire stood immediately. “Noah—”
“He stays,” Miles interrupted. “Two guards outside. No one enters.”
Claire didn’t like it.
But she understood it.
War logic had replaced domestic logic in this house overnight.
She followed Miles out.
The study doors were already open.
Dominic stood behind his desk, sleeves rolled up, tie gone. The bruise from Claire’s slap had faded, but something else had replaced it—fatigue sharpened into focus.
On the desk: new files.
Printed.
Marked.
Cross-referenced.
And one photograph face down.
Dominic didn’t look up when she entered.
“He spoke again,” he said.
Claire went still. “Noah?”
Miles answered instead. “Not words this time. Full recall.”
Dominic finally looked at her.
“And he remembered more than he should have.”
Claire swallowed. “He’s a child.”
Dominic’s voice dropped.
“No,” he said. “Not anymore.”
Silence.
Miles stepped forward and placed a tablet on the desk.
A live feed.
Security corridor.
But not inside the estate.
Outside.
East gate.
Claire leaned in—and froze.
Because Ethan Kincaid was not alone anymore.
There were cars.
Three.
Then five.
Then more.
“Contacts confirmed,” Miles said quietly. “Ethan is consolidating outside assets.”
Dominic exhaled slowly.
“So it begins.”
Claire’s voice tightened. “What begins?”
No one answered immediately.
Because they already knew.
War.
The first shot did not come from inside the estate.
It came from the perimeter.
A distant crack echoed through the mansion’s reinforced glass.
Then another.
Miles turned sharply. “Sniper fire—east wall!”
Instantly, the house shifted.
Guards moved.
Doors locked.
Systems engaged.
Dominic didn’t move.
He was still staring at the feed.
Ethan was speaking to someone off-camera.
Then he looked up.
Directly into the lens.
And smiled.
Claire stepped back instinctively. “He’s attacking you here?”
Miles shook his head. “Not attacking.”
A pause.
“Testing.”
A sudden crash shook the lower floor.
Claire jolted. “What was that?”
Miles touched his earpiece. “Breach at service entrance!”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“They’re inside already.”
Claire’s breath caught. “How?”
Dominic’s eyes flicked toward the hallway.
“Because someone helped them.”
Silence.
That landed heavier than the gunfire outside.
Claire whispered, “Inside the house?”
No answer.
But Dominic’s silence was the answer.
Upstairs.
Noah woke again.
But this time, he didn’t sit up slowly.
He bolted upright.
Eyes wide.
Breathing fast.
Claire wasn’t there.
Only two guards outside.
One of them turned instantly when the door opened.
“Noah—stay inside.”
But the boy was already moving.
Not toward them.
Past them.
Down the corridor.
And for the first time, he wasn’t silent.
He was breathing words under his breath.
Fragments.
Not coherent.
But real.
“Red… door… broken… fire…”
The guards followed immediately.
“Boss, the kid is moving—”
Static.
Then Miles’ voice over comms:
“Do NOT lose him!”
Claire heard it before she saw it.
Running.
Small footsteps.
Fast.
Too fast.
She turned just in time to see Noah appear at the top of the staircase.
“Noah!” she shouted.
The boy didn’t stop.
He was looking at something only he could see.
Then—
he froze.
Mid-step.
His eyes locked on the lower floor.
Claire followed his gaze.
And felt her stomach drop.
Because standing at the bottom of the staircase—
was Ethan Kincaid.
Inside the mansion.
No longer a threat outside.
Already inside.
Dominic appeared behind Claire instantly.
The air changed.
Two brothers.
One house.
A legacy collapsing in real time.
Ethan looked up slowly.
And smiled.
“There he is,” he said softly. “The witness.”
Noah didn’t move.
But his breathing changed again.
Faster.
Broken.
Claire stepped forward instinctively. “Stay back from him!”
Ethan tilted his head. “Or what?”
Dominic’s voice cut through the space like steel.
“You came into my house.”
Ethan nodded.
“I came back.”
A pause.
Then:
“Because you can’t protect him from the truth forever.”
Noah suddenly spoke again.
But not to Ethan.
Not to Dominic.
To the air itself.
“Red door.”
Claire went cold.
Miles’ voice came through comms urgently. “Boss—service wing breach is converging on main hall!”
Dominic turned slightly. “What red door?”
Noah pointed.
Not at Ethan.
Not at Dominic.
But behind them.
Toward the sealed corridor leading to Miranda’s private wing.
The forbidden section.
The untouched section.
The section even Dominic never entered anymore.
Claire whispered, “Noah… what’s there?”
The boy’s voice broke.
“Mommy was there.”
Silence.
Ethan exhaled slowly.
“Finally,” he said.
Dominic snapped his head toward him. “What did you do?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked forward one step.
Then another.
Guards appeared at the edges of the hall—but none fired.
Not yet.
Because Miles hadn’t given the order.
And Miles was watching Dominic.
Waiting.
Claire grabbed Noah instinctively.
But the boy resisted.
Not violently.
Just firmly.
Like something inside him had locked into place.
He whispered:
“She didn’t crash.”
Claire froze.
“She was taken.”
Dominic closed his eyes for a fraction of a second.
Ethan smiled again.
“And now he remembers everything.”
A loud explosion echoed from the east wing.
The estate shook.
Glass vibrated.
Security systems flickered.
Miles shouted, “We’re under full breach—repeat, full breach!”
Dominic finally moved.
Not toward Ethan.
Not toward Claire.
But toward the corridor Noah had pointed at.
The red door.
Claire followed instantly. “Dominic—wait—”
But he didn’t stop.
Because something in him had already accepted it.
The truth wasn’t outside anymore.
It was inside the house.
It always had been.
The red door stood at the end of the corridor.
Locked.
Sealed.
Untouched for years.
Dominic stared at it.
Noah stood beside Claire, watching it too.
Ethan appeared behind them slowly.
“Open it,” Ethan said softly.
Dominic didn’t move.
Then Noah spoke.
Very quietly.
Almost like a memory returning through broken glass.
“She’s inside.”
Silence.
May you like
Then Dominic reached for the handle.
And turned it.
