Chapter 8 - The Charity Auction

The grand ballroom of the Dorchester Hotel was packed with London’s elite for the annual Children’s Hospital Charity Auction. It was the biggest social event of the winter, and everyone who was anyone was in attendance.

Evelyn Whitmore had even returned from the Cotswolds, sitting at her table with a tight, proud smile, determined to show the world that the Whitmore family was still undefeated.

As the auctioneer took the stage, the double doors of the ballroom opened.

A sudden hush fell over the room.

Alexander Whitmore walked in. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly. His hair was styled back, and his winter-blue eyes were sharp and commanding.

But he was not alone.

On his arm was Grace Ellison.

She wore a simple, elegant emerald-green silk gown that complemented her dark hair and fair skin. Her makeup was minimal, her natural beauty shining through far brighter than the heavy diamonds worn by the other women in the room. She held herself with a quiet, regal grace that silenced every whisper in her path.

As they walked toward the main table, Lady Caroline stepped into their path, a sweet, venomous smile on her lips.

"Alexander, darling," Caroline said, her voice carrying across the quiet room. "How lovely of you to join us. And who is your... charming guest? I don't believe we’ve met."

Alexander stopped. He looked at Caroline, his eyes cold and unyielding.

"This is Grace Ellison," Alexander said, his voice deep and clear, ensuring everyone in the room could hear. "She is the director of the new Iris Whitmore Foundation for Disabled Children."

He reached out, his hand wrapping gently but firmly around Grace’s waist, pulling her close to his side. "And she is my partner."

Caroline’s smile froze. She looked at Grace, then at the diamonds glittering on Grace’s wrists—not the replicas, but the real, historic Whitmore family jewels that Alexander’s father had given to his mother.

"Your... partner?" Caroline stammered.

"Yes," Alexander said. "And as of tonight, the Whitmore Group is donating ten million pounds to the foundation Grace is leading. We believe in supporting those who actually care for children, rather than those who simply talk about them."

He walked past Caroline, leading Grace to their table at the front of the room.

Evelyn, sitting nearby, watched them. She saw the way Alexander looked at Grace—with a protective, deep, and sincere love that he had never shown to anyone since his wife’s death. She saw the way Grace looked back at him, with a quiet, steady strength that no amount of money could buy.

Evelyn slowly lowered her wine glass. She realized, finally and completely, that the empire her husband had built on cold steel and glass was now being rebuilt on something far stronger: love.
