Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Cliff

An hour later.
The children had been moved inside the main school building for lunch under the supervision of the assistant teachers and Julian.
Elena stood on the edge of the rocky cliff behind the school, overlooking the vast, dark blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The wind blew her dark hair across her face as she looked out at the horizon.
Behind her, footsteps sounded on the gravel.
Damian walked up, stopping five feet behind her. He had wiped his face, but his eyes were red-rimmed, his hands tucked deep into his trousers pockets to hide their uncontrollable trembling.
"She looks like you," Damian said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Her eyes... her mouth... she has your spirit."
Elena didn't turn around. Her voice was as cool and vast as the ocean before them. "Her name is Klara. She likes watercolors, sea turtles, and cinnamon toast. She thinks the world is a kind, warm place because she has never spent a single day inside your house."
Every word hit Damian like a physical blow, but he didn't flinch. He knew he deserved every drop of poison she offered.
"I looked for you, Elena," Damian whispered. "Every day for five years. I spent tens of millions of dollars... I nearly lost my mind."
Elena turned around slowly, looking at him with an expression that broke his heart far more than anger ever could.
It was pity.
"Why, Damian?" Elena asked quietly. "Why did you look for us? So you could put us in another gold cage? So you could tell your board members that you have an heir?"
"NO!" Damian took an impulsive step forward, then caught himself and stopped. "No, Elena. I looked for you because I realized, the moment my plane left the ground five years ago, that I had destroyed the only real thing I ever owned."
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a worn, frayed piece of paper.
"Do you know what this is?" Damian asked, holding it out with a shaking hand.
Elena glanced down. It was the deed to the Black Pine estate.
"I signed the estate over to a charitable foundation four years ago," Damian said, tears filling his eyes again. "The house has been completely dismantled. The stones were crushed. The land was turned into a public wildlife preserve in your name. I burned every piece of furniture, every painting... everything that belonged to the life I used to live."
Elena looked at his face, seeing the profound, unrepairable ruin in his dark eyes. The arrogant, untouchable crime lord she had married was gone. In his place stood a hollowed-out ghost of a man who had burned his own kingdom to ashes in a desperate attempt to cleanse his soul.
"I am not asking you to come back to me, Elena," Damian choked out, dropping his hand. "I know I lost the right to be your husband the night I drove away into that storm. I know you will never forgive me."
He paused, looking back toward the schoolhouse window where tiny Klara was sitting at a table.
"I am only begging you..." Damian’s voice cracked into a whisper, "let me be something to her. Let me buy her clothes, build her schools, protect her from afar. Don't let her grow up thinking her father was a monster who didn't want her."
Elena looked at him for a long, silent moment. The wind rustled the pine trees around them.
"She doesn't think you're a monster, Damian," Elena said softly.
Damian blinked, startled. "What?"
May you like
"I told her that her father was a very important man who got lost in a dark forest a long time ago," Elena said, her eyes softening just a fraction. "I told her that he loved her, but he had to find his way out of the trees before he could come home."
Damian covered his face with both hands, letting out a shattered, breathless cry as the weight of her unbelievable mercy crushed his heart.
