Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

Ten minutes later, the schoolyard was filled with local police cruisers and armed security guards personally loyal to Damian.
Victor Vance and his three mercenaries were lying face-down on the gravel in handcuffs, being dragged away into police vans.
Elena stood on the porch, holding Klara tightly in her arms. Her face was pale, but her eyes were fixed on Damian, who was standing beside a police car, quietly giving his statement to the chief of police.
Julian Thorne walked up beside Elena, looking at Damian with a new, quiet respect in his eyes.
"He took down two armed men with his bare hands before my guards could even draw their weapons, Elena," Julian admitted softly. "He didn't care about his own life for a single second. He only cared about her."
Elena looked down at Klara, who was resting her head against Elena’s shoulder, her small eyes watching Damian across the yard.
"Klara," Elena asked gently. "Were you scared?"
"No," Klara shook her head, her voice sweet and confident. "The tall man was strong, Mama. He didn't let the bad men touch my boat."
Elena took a deep breath, feeling an ancient, heavy lock inside her heart finally snap open.
She walked down the steps of the porch and crossed the schoolyard toward Damian.
Damian finished speaking with the police chief and turned as Elena approached. He looked exhausted, his suit torn at the shoulder, his knuckles bruised, but his eyes were completely clear.
"The syndicate won't bother you again, Elena," Damian said, his voice flat and tired. "I’ve turned over the master encryption keys to the Department of Justice. The entire Chicago network will be dismantled by federal authorities by tomorrow morning. It’s completely over. I’ve cut every wire."
Elena looked at his bruised hands, then up into his face.
"You protected her," Elena said softly.
"I will protect both of you until the day my heart stops beating," Damian said simply. "Whether you want me near you or a thousand miles away."
Elena was silent for a long moment. She looked at the ocean wind blowing through the pine trees, then looked back at the man who had traveled through hell and back to stand before her.
"Damian," Elena said quietly.
"Yes?"
"We are having dinner at the cottage tonight at six," Elena said, her voice carrying a faint, warm melody he hadn't heard in six years. "Cinnamon toast, vegetable soup, and watercolors."
Damian stared at her, unable to process her words. "Elena... are you inviting me?"

"Klara wants to show you her sea turtle painting," Elena said, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across her lips. "And I think... it’s time the man from the forest learned how to be a father."
A profound, radiant warmth spread through Damian’s chest. He nodded slowly, tears of overwhelming gratitude shining in his dark eyes. "I’ll be there at five-thirty."
