Chapter 10 - Ashes and Empires

The underground loading dock was a chaos of smoke, sirens, and flickering red lights.

Victoria Vance stood near the exit ramp, wrapped in her white fur coat, watching the distant orange glow of flames rising from the lower utility shafts. A cold, victorious smile played on her lips. By morning, Dominic would be broken, ruined, and completely under her father’s control.

Suddenly, the side door of the maintenance exit flew open.

Victoria turned, expecting to see charred remains or captured luggage. Instead, her breath caught in her throat.

Layla stepped out into the snowy night air, coughing slightly, her hand firmly resting on her stomach, looking bruised and exhausted, but fiercely, miraculously alive.

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer horror. “You... how did you—?”

“You forgot that maids know every hidden hallway, every service stair, and every unlocked door in this building,” Layla said, her voice cutting through the roar of the fire engines in the distance.

With a feral shriek of rage, Victoria reached into her handbag, pulled out a small, snub-nosed silver revolver, and pointed it directly at Layla’s chest.

“You stubborn little bitch!” Victoria screamed, her face contorting into a mask of pure insanity. “You just won't die! But I’ll finish you right here before Dominic ever—”

Bang.

A single, deafening gunshot echoed across the loading dock.

Victoria gasped, dropping the revolver. She looked down in sheer disbelief as a dark red stain blossomed across the front of her expensive designer coat.

She collapsed backward onto the snowy concrete.

Behind her, standing in the doorway of the burning tower, stood Dominic Gallow.

His clothes were torn, his face smeared with soot, holding a smoking firearm in his right hand. His chest heaved as he scanned the scene, his dark eyes finally landing on Layla standing safely by the maintenance van.

Dominic dropped the gun. It clattered loudly against the pavement.

He didn't look at Victoria. He didn't look at the burning building behind him. He ran across the snowy concrete, falling to his knees right in front of Layla, his hands trembling violently as he reached out to touch her face.

“Layla,” he choked out, his voice cracking with a raw, shattered emotion she had never heard from him before. “Layla... are you... are you and the babies...?”

“We’re alive,” Layla whispered, tears finally breaking free, streaming down her soot-stained cheeks.

Dominic pulled her into his arms, burying his face against her shoulder, weeping openly in front of his guards, his enemies, and the burning ruins of his empire.

“I was wrong,” Dominic sobbed against her neck, holding her as if she were the only real thing left in the world. “I was blind. Victoria... her father... they forged everything. I am so sorry, Layla. Please... God, please forgive me.”

Layla closed her eyes. She felt the heavy, suffocating weight of the past months finally lift away. She looked down at Dominic—the ruthless billionaire mafia boss who had brought empires to their knees, now kneeling in the snow, begging for her forgiveness.

She slowly raised her arms and wrapped them around his broad, trembling shoulders.

“Get up, Dominic,” Layla whispered softly, a quiet, fierce smile touching her lips. “We have twins coming. And we have an empire to rebuild—together.”

Three months later, the Gallow Tower rose from the ashes, completely renovated, its corrupt partners indicted, and its leadership restored to the only two people who truly understood the cost of survival.

On a warm spring afternoon, beneath the flowering cherry trees outside the Chicago riverfront, Dominic Gallow slipped a simple platinum band onto Layla’s finger, watching proudly as she held their newborn twins in her arms—two healthy, perfect babies who would never know a single day of cold or hunger.

The mafia boss had lost his empire of fear, but he had finally found his kingdom of love.
