Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

For the next two weeks, the penthouse felt like a gilded cage.

Layla was provided with private medical care, gourmet meals designed by nutritionists, and a personal security guard stationed outside her door twenty-four hours a day. Dominic was rarely home before midnight, buried under a mountain of sudden corporate takeovers and hushed meetings with his underground associates.

He visited her room every night.

He never stayed long, but every night around one in the morning, he would quietly open her bedroom door, walk over to the bedside, and place his hand gently against her swollen belly, feeling the rhythmic kicks of his unborn twins. He never said much—just checked in to ensure she was safe, ensure the guards were doing their jobs, and make sure she had everything she needed.

Layla found her resolve crumbling slowly against his quiet, intense devotion. She had hated him when he fired her; she had feared him when she found out who he really was. But watching the ruthless billionaire mafia boss kneel beside her bed with a look of fierce, protective awe on his face changed something inside her.

However, outside the secure bubble of the penthouse, the storm was brewing.

Down in the subterranean parking garage beneath the Gallow Tower, Victoria Vance sat in the back of a tinted black SUV, talking in low, urgent tones to a scarred, heavy-set man named Viktor.

Viktor was the head of security for the Vance family—and a ruthless enforcer who handled the dirty work that didn't appear on corporate balance sheets.

“The billionaire thinks he can keep her locked in a glass box and pretend the bastards don't exist,” Victoria hissed, swirling a glass of champagne in her gloved hand. “If those twins are born, Dominic’s attention will shift permanently. And if he discovers the offshore accounts my father and I drained from Gallow Development over the past three years... we’re all finished.”

“What do you want done, Miss Vance?” Viktor asked, his voice gravelly and flat. “An accident? A break-in?”

“Not yet,” Victoria smiled coldly. “A sudden accident right now would make Dominic suspicious. He’s already doubling his private security around her. We need something cleaner. Something that takes out the maid, the brats, and leaves Dominic vulnerable enough to sign over total control of the development trust to my father before the wedding.”

“And how do we do that?”

Victoria leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. “By using Dominic’s own underworld enemies against him. Plant the shipment manifest from the private docks in her room. Make it look like she’s been leaking Gallow’s freight schedules to the Russian syndicate. When Dominic discovers his beloved maid is a corporate spy... his pride will destroy her faster than any bullet ever could.”

And if that didn't work? Victoria’s smile turned razor-sharp.

Then we make sure the brakes on his private elevator fail the night before the wedding.
