📖 CHAPTER 3: THE GHOST OF ISABELLA

The words lingered long after Sofia stopped speaking.
“The same people who killed her once already.”
Dominic Russo had heard threats all his life.
He had been threatened by cartel leaders in prison yards, by corrupt senators behind closed doors, by men who smiled while ordering hits on his name.
But this…
This was different.
Because this wasn’t a threat.
It was a confession buried in a child’s voice.
Sofia stood in front of him, small and steady, like she had been carrying something far too heavy for far too long.
Behind her, the mansion felt alive again—too alive. The laughter of the triplets echoed faintly through the halls, but now it didn’t sound innocent.
It sounded like a warning.
Dominic slowly rose to his feet.
“Start from the beginning,” he said.
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Lena immediately tensed.
Because she understood something important:
This wasn’t the voice of a man asking for truth.
It was the voice of a man preparing for war.
THE NIGHT ISABELLA DISAPPEARED
Lena led him to the study.
The same room where he had learned about his children hours earlier now felt like a courtroom built for judgment.
She placed a second file on the desk.
This one was thinner.
Damaged.
Burned at the edges.
Dominic didn’t touch it yet.
Lena spoke first.
“The night Isabella disappeared, she wasn’t alone.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“I had a full security detail on her.”
Lena shook her head.
“You thought you did.”
She tapped the file.
“Your system was compromised three months before her death was ever staged.”
Silence.
Then Dominic said slowly:
“By who?”
Lena hesitated again.
This time, longer.
Then:
“By someone inside your inner circle.”
A stillness spread across the room.
Even Dominic didn’t move.
Because in his world, there were enemies.
There were rivals.
There were wars.
But there was one rule that had kept him alive for fifteen years:
Never trust your own men completely.
And yet he had trusted a few.
Too few to survive betrayal.
Lena continued.
“Isabella discovered a financial pipeline running through Russo Enterprises.”
“She traced it back to offshore accounts… shell companies… and military-grade laundering systems.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s impossible without access to my top tier servers.”
“It wasn’t impossible,” Lena said softly.
“Because one of your top tier operators gave them access.”
A pause.
Then the name hit the air like a bullet.
“Victor Hale.”
Dominic froze.
The name meant something.
Victor wasn’t just an employee.
He was family.
Or had been treated like it.
The man who had stood beside Dominic for a decade.
The man who had been at Isabella’s funeral.
The man who had helped raise security protocols after her “death.”
Dominic’s voice dropped dangerously.
“Victor is loyal.”
Lena didn’t flinch.
“He was loyal to the empire,” she corrected.
“Not to you.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FIRE
Lena opened the burned file.
Inside were surveillance photos.
Black and white.
Blurry at the edges.
But enough.
A hospital corridor.
A woman being pushed on a stretcher.
Her face partially visible.
Isabella.
Dominic’s breath stopped.
“No,” he whispered.
Lena didn’t stop him from looking.
“Look at the timestamp,” she said.
Dominic did.
His hands tightened slightly.
The date was the same as the official crash report.
But the location…
Not a highway.
Not a wreck site.
A private medical facility.
Unregistered.
Hidden.
Dominic’s voice sharpened.
“She survived.”
Lena nodded.
“For a short time.”
Then she pointed to another image.
This one was worse.
A hallway.
Two armed men.
And a third figure standing between them.
Isabella.
Alive.
Standing.
Fighting.
Dominic felt something break in his chest.
“She was trying to escape,” Lena said.
“She was taken before she could reach you.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Suffocating.
Dominic’s voice cracked slightly.
“Where was I?”
Lena answered without hesitation.
“You were in Hong Kong.”
“Closing a weapons deal that your own people scheduled to keep you away.”
That landed differently.
Too precisely.
Too intentionally.
Like a trap that had already closed before he even knew he was inside it.
THE CHILDREN WERE NEVER MEANT TO LIVE
Dominic turned suddenly.
“What about the children?”
His voice sharpened.
“They were born after she disappeared?”
Lena shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
Then:
“They were born before she was taken.”
Dominic frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Lena stepped closer.
“It does when you understand what they wanted.”
She pointed at the file again.
“The children were leverage.”
“If Isabella died cleanly, they were useless.”
“But if she lived… they controlled her.”
Dominic’s eyes darkened.
“So they kept her alive.”
“Yes,” Lena said.
“For negotiation.”
A silence followed.
Then Sofia’s voice echoed faintly from the hallway.
“She told me she ran because they would use us to hurt Daddy.”
Dominic turned toward the sound.
Sofia stood there again.
Watching him.
Not as a child.
But as someone who had already survived too much.
“And she was right,” Lena added quietly.
THE NAME SHE WAS AFRAID TO SAY
Dominic turned back to Lena.
“One name,” he said.
“Who is behind this?”
Lena hesitated.
For the first time, real fear crossed her face.
Not of Dominic.
But of the answer.
Then she said it.
“Sebastian Moretti.”
The room changed temperature instantly.
Even Dominic reacted.
That name wasn’t just powerful.
It was historical.
Sebastian Moretti didn’t lead organizations.
He built them.
He destroyed them.
And he never appeared publicly unless the war was already over.
Dominic’s voice dropped.
“He’s a myth.”
Lena shook her head.
“No.”
“He’s the one who built your empire before you took it.”
A pause.
Then the final truth:
“And Isabella was never just your wife.”
“She was his daughter.”
Silence shattered everything.
Dominic stared at her.
For the first time since this began, he looked truly shaken.
“That’s not possible.”
Lena nodded slowly.
“It is.”
“And when she chose you… she became the one thing he could never control.”
Dominic’s hands tightened into fists.
“So he took her back.”
Lena nodded again.
“And erased the only version of her that belonged to you.”
THE RETURN OF THE CHILDREN
From somewhere inside the house, laughter erupted again.
But this time, it was different.
Not playful.
Not innocent.
It echoed down the hallway like something awakening.
Dominic turned sharply toward the sound.
Sofia stepped beside him.
“They’re remembering,” she whispered.
“Remembering what?”
Sofia looked up at him.
“Who they are supposed to become.”
A chill moved through the room.
Lena’s voice lowered.
“They were trained for two futures.”
“One where you ruled the empire.”
“And one where you didn’t survive long enough to stop them.”
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“They’re children.”
Lena met his gaze.
“Not to them.”
A long silence followed.
Then Sofia said something that froze everything completely.
“Daddy…”
“If you don’t choose soon…”
May you like
She paused.
“…they will choose for you.”
