Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

Above, in the grand foyer, massive overhead industrial sprinklers suddenly roared to life.

Thousands of gallons of water rained down from the high ceilings, extinguishing the nascent fires and drenching the courtyard in a freezing, blinding deluge.

The sudden deluge disoriented Dominic’s remaining mercenaries, short-circuiting their weapon optics and blinding their line of sight.

"NOW! CLEAR THE FOYER!" Adrien’s voice bellowed above the noise of the water.

Adrien and his men surged down the grand marble staircase, sweeping through the drenched foyer like an unstoppable force, disarming and neutralizing Dominic’s remaining force in less than two minutes.

Adrien stepped through the shattered front doors into the rain-soaked courtyard.

Dominic stood near his ruined ram-truck, his silver-topped cane discarded in the mud, his hands trembling as he drew a small, nickel-plated revolver from his coat.

"It was mine!" Dominic shrieked, his mind snapping under the weight of his defeat. "The Moretti name belonged to me!"

Adrien walked up to his uncle, ignoring the revolver pointed at his chest. With a single, fluid motion, Adrien grabbed Dominic’s wrist, twisted it back until the gun clattered into the mud, and forced the old man to his knees.

Marcus and four guards immediately swarmed the area, slapping steel handcuffs around Dominic’s wrists.

"Take him to the federal authorities," Adrien ordered coldly, wiping rain from his eyes. "Give them the complete financial records of his shell companies in Panama. He will spend the rest of his natural life in a supermax prison."

"Adrien!" a voice called out from the ruined kitchen entrance.

Adrien turned.

Standing in the doorway, soaked with water and covered in white chemical soot, holding a dented copper pan, was Lena.

Adrien’s heart stopped. He abandoned his men, sprinting across the mud-soaked courtyard, leaping up the stone steps, and gathering Lena into his arms.

He lifted her off her feet, pulling her close against his pounding chest, burying his face in her wet hair.

"You're safe," Adrien sobbed, his voice cracking with emotion as he held her tightly. "My God, Lena... you're safe."

"I pulled the fire switch," Lena laughed weakly through her tears, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I dented your copper pan, though."

Adrien pulled back, looking at her soot-stained, beautiful face, his dark eyes brimming with tears of overwhelming love and admiration.

"You crazy, magnificent woman," Adrien whispered, kissing her fiercely in the middle of the rain, sealing their victory with a promise that would last forever.
