Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

Uncle Bruno laughed nervously, waving his hand dismissively. "Aleandro, my boy, you've lost your mind from grief! I loved you like my own son! I helped your father build this empire!"
"You helped my father build it," Aleandro agreed, "and then you helped the Irish mob plant a bomb in his car ten years ago when he refused to sell our shipping docks."
Bruno’s face drained of all color.
Aleandro opened the dossier, pulling out a set of financial printouts and bank transfers. "Three days ago, two million dollars was transferred from a shell company in Zurich to the personal account of the chief bartender at tonight's gala. The authorization code came from your private desk, Bruno."
Bruno’s hand darted toward his jacket pocket, reaching for a hidden snub-nosed revolver.

Before Bruno’s hand could clear his lapel, a single bullet tore through his shoulder. He screamed, collapsing out of his chair onto the floor, clutching his bleeding arm.
Dominick Romano stood behind Bruno, holding his smoking gun, his face dark with betrayal.
"You killed my sister, you old bastard," Dominick growled, stepping forward to press the barrel of his pistol against Bruno’s forehead.
"Wait!" Bruno wept, coughing up blood on the carpet. "It wasn't just me! I had help! The Romano family... someone gave me the cyanide!"
Dominick froze, his eyes widening. "What did you say?"
"Valentina knew!" Bruno choked out, desperate to save his own life. "Valentina knew about the hit! She was supposed to stay away from the head table! She drank from the wrong tray because she was drunk and panicked when the maid's child outdanced her!"

Sophia gasped, pulling Emma closer to her chest.
Valentina hadn't just been a cruel socialite trying to humiliate a toddler—she had been a co-conspirator in a plot to murder Aleandro, only to fall victim to her own greed and jealousy.
