Chapter 5 - The War Begins

The burning of the South Side warehouses was just the opening shot.

Lorenzo Falcone had officially defected, taking forty percent of the Syndicate’s armed enforcers with him and joining forces with Marco Lombardi, the bloodthirsty Don of the Lombardi syndicate.

Together, they launched a hostile, violent bid to overthrow Lucian and take control of Chicago.

Over the next three weeks, Chicago became a quiet warzone. Drive-by shootings, dock raids, and corporate sabotage dominated the headlines. Lucian worked round-the-clock, sleeping barely two hours a night, coordinating defense strategies and protecting his legal business interests.

He moved his parents, Arthur and Eleanor, to a secure bunker in Italy. But Emma refused to go.

“I’m not leaving you, Lucian,” Emma insisted fiercely in his office when he tried to put her on a private jet.

“Emma, this isn't a game!” Lucian yelled, his voice laced with panic and frustration. “Marco Lombardi is a sadist. If Lorenzo gets his hands on you, he will use you to break me! You need to go to Europe where it’s safe!”

“I am your wife!” Emma shouted back, stepping directly into his personal space, her eyes flashing with defiance. “Contract or no contract, I am not running away while you fight for your life! I have a restaurant to run, and I have a place by your side. Stop trying to hide me away like a prize!”

Lucian stared at her, stunned by her fiery courage. Any other woman would have begged to flee. Emma stood her ground, ready to face the storm with him.

In impulse, Lucian grabbed her waist, pulled her flush against his body, and crashed his lips onto hers.

The kiss was fierce, passionate, and desperate—a sudden release of all the hidden tension, fear, and unspoken love that had built between them over the past weeks. Emma gasped into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing him back with equal intensity.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathless.

“If you stay,” Lucian whispered raggedly, his thumb tracing her cheek, “I will burn this whole city to ashes before I let anyone lay a finger on you.”

“Then let’s win this together,” Emma murmured.

Emma didn't just sit idly in the estate. She used her sharp mind to help him.

While Lucian focused on the physical war, Emma focused on the money. Sitting in the library with Lucian’s financial analysts, Emma spent days dissecting the Lombardi cartel’s legal shell companies. She discovered that Lombardi was using a network of fake charities and offshore banks in the Cayman Islands to fund his hitmen.

Using her position as the head of Rosalind’s charitable foundation, Emma quietly alerted federal auditors and forensic accountants to these shell companies.

Without firing a single bullet, Emma froze sixty percent of the Lombardi cartel’s liquid assets in a single afternoon.

When Lucian received the news that Lombardi’s hitmen were walking away because their paychecks had bounced, he stared at Emma in absolute amazement.

“You just crippled an entire cartel with a desk phone and a legal audit,” Lucian said, a dark, proud smile spreading across his face.

“I told you,” Emma said with a playful wink. “Violence is expensive. Arithmetic is free.”

However, their victory was short-lived.

Lorenzo Falcone, furious and desperate as his funding collapsed, decided to take the ultimate, fatal gamble. He knew he couldn't beat Lucian in open war or financial combat. He needed a hostage.

And he knew exactly where Emma would be every Thursday evening: leaving Rosalind’s after delivering meals to the local community center.
