Chapter 7 - The Burning Mill

The abandoned Chicago Steel Works mill stood like a jagged black monster against the storm-swept sky near Lake Michigan. Rain lashed against its rusted metal walls, and the roar of the freezing waves echoed through the cavernous interior.

Inside, Emma was tied securely to a wooden chair on an elevated steel catwalk, twenty feet above the hard concrete floor. Her face was bruised, her lip bleeding where Lorenzo had struck her when she woke up.

Standing near her was Lorenzo, his shoulder crudely bandaged, pacing back and forth with a machine pistol in his hand. Around the warehouse floor stood twelve heavily armed mercenary guards hired by Marco Lombardi.

Marco Lombardi himself—a fat, cruel man in an expensive leather coat—sat on a crate below, sipping whiskey from a flask.

“He’s not coming, Lorenzo,” Lombardi sneered, looking at his watch. “It’s ten minutes past midnight. The Don doesn't sacrifice himself for a woman. Especially not a low-class waitress he married for a corporate stunt.”

“He will come!” Lorenzo snapped, sweating profusely. “You don't know Lucian! He’s obsessed with his image! He won't let—”

BOOM!

A violent explosion shattered the massive steel doors at the front of the mill.

Blinding white flashbang grenades detonated across the warehouse floor, filling the air with deafening sound and smoke.

Before the mercenaries could react, automatic gunfire erupted from the darkness.

Lucian’s strike force poured into the mill with military precision. Smoke screen rounds, suppressed assault rifles, and tactical coordination turned the warehouse into an absolute warzone.

Lombardi’s men were cut down in seconds, panicking as they realized they were vastly outmatched by Lucian’s elite forces.

Lombardi tried to run for the side exit, but a single shot rang out—striking Lombardi directly through the knee. He fell to the concrete, screaming in agony.

Above on the catwalk, Lorenzo panicked.

“Lucian!” Lorenzo screamed into the smoke, grabbing Emma by her hair and pulling her up, pressing the barrel of his gun directly against her temple. “Stop firing or I blow her brains out right now! I swear to God I’ll do it!”

The gunfire below instantly ceased.

The heavy smoke parted. Walking slowly out of the shadows, wearing a rain-soaked trench coat and holding a black pistol, was Lucian Falcone.

His face was terrifying—devoid of fear, devoid of mercy. He looked like an pale shadow of death himself. He walked up the steel stairs leading to the catwalk, stopping twenty feet away from Lorenzo and Emma.

“Lucian... don't,” Emma pleaded quietly, her eyes filling with tears, not for herself, but out of fear for him.

“Stay quiet, sweet girl,” Lucian said softly to Emma, his voice startlingly gentle compared to the cold fury in his eyes.

Then he looked at Lorenzo.

“Put the gun down, Lorenzo,” Lucian commanded softly. “You wanted my empire? You wanted my money? Take it all. Let her walk.”

Lorenzo laughed hysterically. “You think I’m stupid?! The moment I let her go, you kill me! I want a helicopter! I want safe passage out of the country! Give me that, or she dies with me!”

Lorenzo’s hand trembled on the trigger. His finger began to squeeze.

In that fraction of a second, Emma remembered the small bottle of hot water and the heavy metal thermos she had kept in her coat pocket—the ones she used for her night walks.

With a sudden burst of strength, Emma slammed her head backward into Lorenzo’s broken shoulder.

Lorenzo roared in agony, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second.

BANG!

A single shot echoed through the mill.

Lucian had fired with terrifying precision. The bullet struck Lorenzo’s right hand, shattering his gun into pieces.

Lorenzo screamed, falling backward against the railing.

Lucian rushed forward like a lightning bolt. He grabbed Lorenzo by the throat, lifting the heavier man entirely off his feet, and slammed him against the steel railing over the twenty-foot drop.

“Lucian, please!” Lorenzo choked out, gasping for air, staring into the terrifying, pitch-black eyes of his cousin. “We’re family! We’re blood!”

“You stopped being my family the moment you threatened my wife,” Lucian whispered coldly.

Lucian raised his gun, pointing it straight between Lorenzo’s eyes.

“Lucian! Stop!”

Emma’s voice cut through the cold air.

Lucian froze. He looked over his shoulder.

Emma was standing, her ropes cut by Diego who had rushed up behind them. She stepped toward Lucian, rain and sweat dripping down her face. She reached out, placing her hand gently on Lucian’s gun, slowly lowering it.

“Don't do this,” Emma wept softly, looking into his soul. “If you execute him in cold blood right now, you become the monster they want you to be. Don't ruin your life for him. He’s not worth your soul, Lucian.”

Lucian stared at her. The bloodlust, the darkness, the terrible violent rage that had consumed him for hours suddenly began to recede, melted away by the light in her eyes.

He looked at Lorenzo, who was sobbing in terror.

Lucian slammed Lorenzo onto the steel floor of the catwalk, where Diego immediately handcuffed him.

“The police will take him,” Lucian said, his voice raspy. “He will spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison for treason and attempted murder.”

Lucian turned to Emma.

He pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair, holding her so tightly that neither of them could breathe. His body shook with quiet, silent sobs of sheer relief.

“I was so scared,” Lucian whispered into her neck, dropping his gun to the floor. “I was so scared I lost you.”

Emma wrapped her arms around his back, holding him just as tightly. “I’m here, Lucian. I’m right here.”
