Chapter 7 - THE STORM OVER CEBU

By mid-December, the transformation inside the Callaway mansion was nothing short of miraculous.
Chloe had returned to school, but she was no longer the feared, arrogant bully of Westbridge Academy. She arrived in a simple sedan driven by her father, carrying her own books, wearing simple clothes. When her former wealthy friends tried to mock her for "losing her privileges," Chloe simply walked away, realizing with startling clarity how empty their cruel laughter truly was.
Every afternoon, she rushed home not to shop online, but to help Maria in the kitchen and work on a secret project she had started in her room.
Then, on December twentieth, disaster struck six thousand miles away.
Super Typhoon Odette roared across the central Philippines, making direct landfall in Cebu.
Maria was in the kitchen preparing dinner when the news broke on the television screen. Images of flattened houses, snapped utility poles, and rushing floodwaters filled the monitor.
Maria dropped her wooden spoon. Her face turned ghost-white.
She grabbed her phone, her fingers trembling violently as she dialed her sister’s number in Cebu.
Line busy. Line busy. Service unavailable.
For three hours, Maria sat at the kitchen counter, frantically redialing every number she knew in the Philippines. Nothing went through. The entire province of Cebu was without power, communication, or water.
By eight o'clock, Maria was in total panic. She sat on her small bed in the staff wing, clutching a small wooden rosary, tears streaming silently down her cheeks.
The calm, unshakable woman who had survived every storm in the Callaway mansion was completely shattered by the silence from across the ocean.
A soft knock came at her door.
Chloe stepped inside, holding two hot mugs of chamomile tea. She saw Maria’s state and immediately set the mugs down, dropping to her knees beside Maria’s bed.
"Maria," Chloe said urgently, taking Maria’s cold hands. "What happened?"
"My son..." Maria sobbed, her voice breaking into ragged pieces. "Luis... the typhoon hit his village directly. The roofs are gone. The water is everywhere. I cannot reach them, Miss Chloe. I cannot reach my boy."
Chloe felt a wave of fierce, protective energy surge through her body. Six months ago, she wouldn't have cared. Six months ago, she didn't even know where Cebu was on a map.
Now, Maria was the woman who had saved her life.
"Stay right here," Chloe said firmly, standing up. "Don't move."
Chloe ran out of the room, down the long corridor, and burst into her father's study.
Ethan was on a conference call with board members. Chloe didn't care. She slammed the laptop shut.
"Dad!" Chloe yelled, her eyes blazing. "Maria’s son is in danger! The Philippines was hit by a massive typhoon, and her entire village is underwater! She can't reach him!"
Ethan stood up instantly, seeing the raw, genuine desperation in his daughter's eyes.
"What do we need, Chloe?" Ethan asked without a second's hesitation.
"We need satellite communication, we need aid, and we need to get Maria answers now," Chloe declared, her voice ringing with the authority of a Callaway.

Ethan picked up his encrypted satellite phone—the one reserved for international emergencies and government affairs.
"Daniel," Ethan said into the receiver, calling his chief executive assistant. "Contact our private logistics team in Manila. I want a private charter helicopter prepared in Cebu within six hours. I want emergency satellite comms deployed to the southern coastal district. Find Luis Santos. Now."
