Chapter 9 - THE GIFT THAT COULD NOT BE BOUGHT

Three months later. March.
The storm in the Philippines had passed, and recovery efforts were well underway, heavily funded by a new ten-million-dollar philanthropic foundation established by Ethan Callaway: The Santos Relief & Education Fund.
It was Maria’s thirty-seventh birthday.
She woke up at six in the morning, as she always did, dressed in her neat navy dress, and walked down the grand staircase into the kitchen.
The kitchen was dark.
Suddenly, the lights flashed on.
"SURPRISE!"
Standing in the center of the kitchen were Ethan, Chloe, and three unexpected guests.
Maria stopped dead in her tracks, her hands flying to her mouth.
Standing beside Chloe was a tall, handsome seventeen-year-old boy with warm brown skin, deep dark eyes, and a bright, dazzling smile—wearing a crisp new suit. Beside him were Maria’s younger sister and her niece.
"Luis?" Maria whispered, her voice trembling.
"Happy birthday, Ma," Luis said, his voice thick with emotion.
Maria flew across the kitchen, throwing her arms around her son’s neck. Luis caught her, lifting his mother off her feet as they both burst into tears, holding each other after three long years of separation across the ocean.
Ethan and Chloe stood to the side, watching the reunion with beaming smiles.
After several minutes of crying, hugging, and endless laughter, Maria finally wiped her eyes and turned to Ethan and Chloe, still holding Luis's hand tightly.
"How... how is this possible?" Maria gasped. "The visas... the travel..."
"Your son is an extraordinary young man, Maria," Ethan smiled warmly. "He finished his exams with top honors despite the typhoon. So, Victoria Sterling—our corporate attorney—arranged full student visas for Luis and your family."
Chloe stepped forward, holding a thick leather folder tied with a gold ribbon. She handed it to Maria.
"What is this, Miss Chloe?" Maria asked softly.
"Open it," Chloe smiled.
Maria untied the ribbon and opened the folder. Inside was a fully executed deed to a beautiful four-bedroom coastal home situated five miles down the beach from the Callaway estate—and an acceptance letter for Luis Santos to the Pre-Med program at Stanford University, fully funded for four years.
Maria stared at the papers, her breath hitching in her throat. She looked up at Ethan, her eyes filled with sudden, intense worry.
"Mr. Callaway... no," Maria said, trying to push the folder back toward Chloe. "This is too much. I cannot accept this. I came here to work, not to take your fortune—"
Chloe caught Maria’s hands, gently folding the folder back into Maria’s calloused palms.
"Maria," Chloe said softly, her eyes clear, deep, and shining with absolute sincerity. "When you came into this house, I was a monster. I destroyed everything because I thought nobody loved me enough to stop me. You didn't buy me gifts. You didn't give me money. You gave me something my father's billions could never buy."
Chloe pressed her hand over Maria’s heart.
"You gave me a soul," Chloe whispered, a single tear tracing down her cheek. "You taught my dad how to love me without buying my forgiveness. This house isn't a bribe, Maria. It's a home. Because you gave us ours."

Maria looked at the seventeen-year-old girl standing in front of her. The arrogant, spoiled heiress who had thrown dresses into the pool and smashed glasses against doors was gone. In her place stood a strong, compassionate, courageous young woman.
Maria pulled Chloe into a fierce, loving embrace, kissing the top of her head as Ethan stepped up, wrapping his large arms around both of them.
