Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Lockdown

"Marcus!" Julian’s voice roared across the ballroom, cutting through the screams of terrified socialites like a thunderclap.

Within three seconds, four heavily armed private security guards in tactical gear burst through the mahogany doors, rifles raised, securing the perimeter. Marcus, Mercer’s head of security, rushed to the center of the room, instantly securing Damon by forcing him face-down onto the sticky, champagne-soaked marble floor.

"Secure the perimeter!" Marcus barked into his shoulder mic. "Lock down all exits! Nobody leaves this estate!"

Guests began scrambling backward toward the doors, panic rippling through the elite crowd like wildfire. Politicians pushed past investors; television anchors abandoned their composure.

Julian didn't look at them. His entire universe had narrowed down to the woman standing a few feet away from him.

Victoria Langford was shaking violently. Her manicured hands fluttered near her throat, her pristine blonde waves slightly disheveled.

"Julian," she whimpered, tears instantly welling in her eyes—tears of pure, theatrical manipulation that had worked on him for three years. "Don't listen to him. He’s lying! He’s a lunatic sent here to ruin our wedding! You know me. You know my family!"

Julian walked toward her. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. But the terrifying, controlled stillness of his demeanor made Victoria back up until the small of her back hit the marble pillar behind her.

"Who is Damon Vance to you, Victoria?" Julian asked softly.

"I told you, I—"

"Damon Vance," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a register of pure ice, "is the registered owner of the shell corporation that received three million dollars from my offshore shipping accounts last month. The same money that vanished from my private study while I was in Tokyo."

Victoria’s breath caught. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.

"And you," Julian turned his dark, piercing gaze toward Grace, who was still standing quietly near the shattered champagne tower, "you knew something was wrong."

Grace stood straight, wiping a speck of champagne off her black sleeve. "I saw him in the service corridor, Mr. Mercer. He was wearing Italian leather shoes with a catering uniform. When I tried to report him, Ms. Langford told me to go back to the supply closet and threatened to fire me."

Victoria hissed like a cornered animal, pointing a shaking finger at Grace. "She’s lying! She’s just a servant! She probably planned this whole thing to extort us—"

"Shut up, Victoria," Julian said. It was not a shout. It was a sentence.

He tapped his lapel mic. "Marcus, call the local police. And call federal marshals. Tell them we have a suspect in custody for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and attempted assassination."

"Right away, Mr. Mercer," Marcus replied over the comms.

Two security guards stepped forward, grabbing Victoria by the arms. She shrieked, thrashing against them, her designer gown tearing as they hauled her away toward the private elevator.

"Julian! You can't do this to me! Julian!" her screams echoed down the vaulted corridor until the heavy steel doors slid shut, cutting her off from the ballroom entirely.

The silence that returned to the room was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Julian stood alone in the center of the shattered glass and spilled wine. He ran a hand through his dark hair, breathing heavily as the reality of what had nearly happened—what had been happening right under his nose for years—finally crashed down on him.

He turned slowly and looked at Grace.

The plain black service dress. The dirt on her knees from the landing. The quiet, unshakable dignity in her posture.

Julian walked over to her. He stopped just two feet away, looking down at her with an expression that carried profound shock, disbelief, and a strange, dawning respect.

"You just saved my life," Julian said quietly.

"I saved everyone's life in this room, Mr. Mercer," Grace replied evenly, her voice devoid of servility. "And I saved your company from being looted from the inside out."

Julian stared at her for a long, silent moment. "Where on earth did you learn to kick like that?"

"My father owned a dojo in Bridgeport," Grace said simply. "Before everything else happened."

Julian nodded slowly. He looked around the ruined ballroom, then back at Grace. "You're no longer head housekeeper, Ms. Miller."

Grace’s eyes narrowed slightly. "If you're firing me because I ruined your engagement party, fine. But I'd like my final paycheck."

A faint, humorless smile touched the corners of Julian’s mouth. "I'm not firing you. Effective immediately, you are the Director of Estate Security and Corporate Risk Assessment for Mercer Harbor Group. Starting salary, triple what you make now. With full medical coverage for your mother."

Grace blinked. The offer was so staggering, so completely detached from her reality, that for a second she thought she might still be in shock from the fight.

"My mother..." Grace whispered. "How did you know about my mother?"

"I own a security firm, Grace," Julian said softly, his dark eyes holding hers with an intensity that made the air between them feel charged. "It's time I started paying attention to the people who actually keep my world from collapsing."
