Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Confrontation

Two days later, the boardroom on the top floor of Mercer Harbor Group headquarters in downtown Chicago hummed with tense, nervous energy.

Ten board members—powerful men and women who controlled billions in assets—sat around a massive mahogany table, murmuring among themselves.

The doors swung open.

Julian Mercer walked in, flanked by Marcus and Grace Miller.

Julian wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his expression a mask of absolute, unyielding authority. Grace walked beside him in a sharp, slate-grey pantsuit, carrying a secure leather folio containing the complete federal dossier on the conspiracy.

"Julian," sputtered Henderson, the senior board member who had quietly backed Victoria’s shadow faction within the company. "What is the meaning of this? Why is a security employee sitting at the executive table?"

Julian pulled out the head chair, sat down slowly, and rested his hands on the mahogany.

"Because, Henderson," Julian said, his voice cutting through the murmurs like a knife, "this 'security employee' is the only reason any of us are sitting in this room today instead of answering questions in a federal grand jury."

He slid a document across the table toward Henderson.

"Federal marshals raided the law offices of Vance & Associates this morning," Julian continued, his dark eyes locking onto Henderson’s rapidly paling face. "They found your signature on the wire transfers funding Damon Vance’s sabotage operation. They found your encrypted correspondence with Victoria Langford."

Henderson slammed his hands on the table, standing up. "This is an outrage! Fabricated evidence! I demand—"

"You demand nothing," Grace interrupted, her voice clear, calm, and devastatingly authoritative. She opened her folio and pulled out a single sheet of paper, sliding it across the table. "This is the forensic IP log tracing the corporate data leaks from our Boston shipping tenders directly to your private Swiss holding account, Henderson. You weren't just helping Victoria. You were trying to force a hostile buyout so you could strip the company's assets."

Henderson stared at the paper. His knees buckled slightly, and he slowly sank back into his chair, completely defeated.

Julian didn't blink. He looked around the silent boardroom.

"Effective immediately," Julian announced, "Henderson’s shares are frozen pending criminal forfeiture. And effective immediately... Grace Miller is appointed as Chief Operating Officer of Mercer Harbor Group, overseeing all corporate risk, infrastructure security, and internal compliance."

Silence descended on the room. Several board members exchanged stunned glances.

Grace herself blinked, turning slightly to look at Julian in absolute shock. "Julian, I didn't—"

"You've been running my estate, protecting my life, and auditing my subsidiaries for three weeks, Grace," Julian whispered, leaning toward her so only she could hear. "You're the only person in this room I actually trust. Are you going to turn down a promotion from the man whose life you saved?"

A slow, brilliant smile broke across Grace’s face.

May you like

"Only if the office comes with better coffee," she replied softly.

The board members, realizing the shift in power was absolute and irrevocable, began to slowly applaud.
