Chapter 10 - The Dog Who Remembered the Sea

The sun was setting over the Pacific Ocean, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of crimson, gold, and deep violet.

At the edge of the grassy bluff, sitting on a wooden bench built into the hillside, sat Holden Cross. Maya sat beside him, her head resting comfortably against his arm, her small fingers holding the repaired silver compass—now polished until it shone like brand-new silver.

Phantom lay across their feet, his massive body providing a warm, heavy blanket against the cool evening sea breeze.

"Dad?" Maya asked softly, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the sun was dipping beneath the water line.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Do you think Mother can see us from up there?" she whispered, pointing a finger toward the first evening star appearing in the twilight.

Holden pulled her closer, wrapping his arm around her shoulders, resting his chin against her dark hair.

"I know she can, Maya," Holden said softly. "She’s the one who sent you through the storm. She’s the one who brought us all here."

Maya looked down at the dog lying across her boots. She reached down, scratching Phantom gently right behind his soft, velvety ears—the exact spot she had touched on that frozen night in the eastern courtyard two years ago.

Phantom opened one amber eye, looking up at her with profound, quiet devotion. He gave two slow, heavy thumps of his tail against the soft grass, then let out a long, contented sigh and closed his eyes to rest in the warmth of the setting sun.

Holden looked from his daughter to the ocean, then down at the killer dog who had become their guardian angel.

The city of shadows, the guns, the blood, and the fear were gone forever, buried beneath the ash of a past that could no longer touch them.

Here, on the edge of the world, where the wind smelled of salt and the waves broke rhythmically against the stone, the beast was at peace, the child was safe, and the man who had lost everything had finally found his home.
