Chapter 8 - The Ledger Unlocked

The dawn that broke over Pier 42 was crisp, blue, and clear.

By seven in the morning, the harbor was filled with red and blue flashing lights from over thirty federal law enforcement vehicles. Federal agents in black jackets were carrying boxes of encrypted drives out of the warehouse, while Dominic Falco was loaded into an armored medical transport in heavy wrist and ankle restraints.

Holden stood on the edge of the wooden pier, watching the tide roll against the pilings.

Special Agent Sarah Chen of the Department of Justice walked over to him, holding a digital tablet.

"The server wipe was halted with forty seconds to spare, Mr. Cross," Agent Chen said, her tone professional, though she looked at Holden with deep curiosity. "The financial ledger recovered from Falco’s server has already implicated three major cartel networks and thirty-four high-ranking officials across four states."

"And Clara Vane?" Holden asked, looking out at the ocean.

"Her name has been completely cleared," Chen said softly. "The DOJ records will reflect that she was an undercover informant who sacrificed everything to secure this evidence. Her daughter will receive full access to the legal trust funds left behind by her estate."

Chen paused, looking at Holden's hand, which rested on Phantom’s head.

"And what about you, Mr. Cross?" Chen asked. "Your name isn't in those dirty ledgers. But everyone in this city knows who you are."

Holden turned to look at her. His face looked tired, but the dark, predatory tension that had defined him for fifteen years was gone.

"Holden Cross died last night at Pier 42," he said calmly. "I'm just a father taking my daughter home."

Agent Chen looked at him for a long moment, then slowly shut her tablet. "Have a safe trip, Mr. Cross."

Holden walked back to his black SUV parked near the main gate.

Inside the heated back seat, Maya was sitting wrapped in a soft blanket, holding a mug of hot chocolate that Vance had bought from a nearby diner.

When Holden opened the door, Maya looked up, her emerald eyes filled with anxiety.

"Is the bad man gone?" she asked softly.

Holden climbed into the seat beside her, pulling her small body close against his side. Phantom squeezed his heavy frame into the footwell beside her legs, resting his chin on her knees.

"He's gone, Maya," Holden said, kissing the top of her head. "He's never coming back."

She looked out the window at the ocean, then reached into her pocket and pulled out the broken silver compass. She looked at the cracked glass, then held it out to Holden.

"Mother said when I found the man who remembered the sea," Maya whispered, "I should give him this so he wouldn't be lonely anymore."

May you like

Holden took the silver compass. He closed his fingers around it, feeling the warmth of his daughter's hand still lingering on the metal.

"I'm not lonely anymore, Maya," Holden said, his voice thick with a quiet joy he had never known. "We're going home."
