Chapter 5 - The Ashes of Truth

The air inside the study was so thick with tension that even the armed guards behind Arthur Vance hesitated, their eyes darting nervously toward the exit.
"You're bluffing, Victor," Arthur spat, though his voice cracked under the weight of his fear. "You won't blow yourself up. You care too much about that company, about your precious reputation!"
"My reputation died in a Manhattan restaurant two hours ago, Arthur," Victor replied calmly, taking another slow step around his desk, keeping his finger firmly on the detonator switch. "The moment I realized my entire life was built on your family's sickening lies, I ceased to care about my legacy."
From inside the safe room, Claire watched the security monitor with her breath caught in her throat. Sophie was sitting on the floor behind her, playing silently with a small plush bear she had found on a shelf, completely unaware of the life-and-death standoff happening six inches away through the reinforced steel wall.
Victor is going to sacrifice himself, Claire realized, her heart pounding against her ribs. He's going to die to protect us.
She couldn't let that happen. Not after he had handed her the custody papers. Not after he had stood up to his own world to give her back her child.
Claire looked around the safe room. On the control panel beside the security monitors was a red toggle switch labeled EXTERNAL SYSTEM OVERRIDE / HALON FIRE SUPPRESSION.
Claire stepped up to the panel, flipped the safety cover, and slammed her hand down on the switch.
Instantly, outside in the study, heavy metal vents in the ceiling opened with a deafening blast of compressed gas. High-pressure white Halon gas flooded the room within two seconds, blinding Arthur Vance and his gunmen, stripping the oxygen from the air, and plunging the room into chaotic fog.
Arthur’s men began coughing violently, dropping their weapons as they stumbled backward toward the hallway, completely disoriented.
Victor, reacting with lightning speed, pulled his suit jacket over his face, lunged across the desk, and slammed his heavy glass scotch bottle directly into Arthur Vance’s temple.
Arthur collapsed to the Persian rug with a heavy thud, unconscious.
Outside the estate, the loud wail of state police sirens finally echoed through the trees. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the long driveway as twelve law enforcement vehicles, backed by tactical SWAT units, swarmed the property.
Inside the safe room, the steel door hissed open.
Victor stood in the doorway, coughing slightly from the lingering Halon gas, his hair messily tumbling over his forehead, his suit jacket torn—but his eyes were alive with an intense, burning flame.
Claire rushed out of the safe room, thrown into an impulse she couldn't control, and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
Victor froze for a fraction of a second, completely stunned by the embrace, before his heavy arms came around her waist, holding her close, pressing his face into her dark hair.
"You're insane," Claire whispered into his ear, her voice shaking with tears. "You were going to blow yourself up!"
"I had to keep them away from that door," Victor said softly, his voice rough from the gas. "I promised I would protect you."
SWAT officers carrying tactical shields rushed into the study, weapons raised, but quickly lowered them when they saw Victor holding Arthur Vance’s unconscious body down on the floor with his boot.
"Federal agents are on scene, Mr. Sterling!" the lead SWAT officer announced. "The perimeter is secure! All hostiles are in custody!"
Victor looked down at Arthur Vance, who was beginning to stir, groaning in pain as police officers slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Take him away," Victor ordered quietly. "And tell the United States Attorney that I will personally provide the paper trail for every crime the Vance family has committed over the last twenty years."
As the officers dragged Arthur Vance out of the house, Victor turned back to Claire.
Sophie walked slowly out of the safe room, rubbing her sleepy eyes, carrying her plush bear. She looked at Victor, then looked at Claire, and reached out her small hands.
Victor dropped to one knee, looking at the little girl he had raised for two years—the girl who was not his blood, but whom he now loved more than his own life.
"Sophie..." Victor whispered softly, his voice trembling.
Sophie walked over, wrapped her tiny arms around Victor’s neck, and laid her head against his shoulder.
"Daddy..." she whispered softly.

Victor closed his eyes, tears finally slipping down his face, hugging the child tightly against his heart, while Claire stood beside them, her hand resting gently on Victor’s shoulder.
The fortress on the Hudson had survived the night—but the real battle for Sophie's future was about to begin in the courts of Geneva.
