Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

That evening, the grand suite at the Hotel des Bergues in Geneva was quiet.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows, the pristine waters of Lake Geneva reflected the glowing lights of the city and the majestic fountain of the Jet d'Eau.
Sophie was fast asleep in the bedroom, tucked under a plush duvet with her worn cloth bunny—the bunny with the one torn ear that Claire had lovingly stitched back together two days earlier.
Claire stood on the balcony, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl, holding a warm cup of tea, watching the moonlight dance across the water.
The glass door slid open quietly behind her. Victor stepped onto the balcony, wearing a black turtleneck and dark trousers, holding two glasses of sparkling mineral water.
"She’s sound asleep," Victor said gently, handing a glass to Claire. "Mrs. Gable said she didn't even wake up when we brought her in from the car."
"She feels safe now," Claire said softly, looking out at the lake. "For two years, she was silent because she felt surrounded by strangers. Children know when they are surrounded by lies, Victor."
Victor rested his elbows on the balcony railing, looking out at the dark horizon. "My late wife, Victoria... she was a deeply troubled woman, Claire. After her third miscarriage, the doctors told her she could never carry a child. I offered to go through legal adoption agencies, but she was obsessed with her social standing. She couldn't bear the thought of the high-society world knowing she couldn't conceive."
"So she hired Moreau," Claire said softly.
"She used my money, my name, and my legal network to construct a horrific lie," Victor confessed, his face filled with sorrow. "I lived in the same house with her, and I never saw the sickness underneath. I was so focused on building my company, on winning the next corporate battle, that I became completely blind to the people around me."
Claire turned to look at him, seeing the genuine remorse etched into the sharp lines of his face.
"You were blind, Victor," Claire said gently. "But you aren't blind anymore. The moment you heard Sophie call me 'Mommy' in that restaurant, you didn't run. You didn't hide behind your lawyers. You locked the doors and faced the truth."
Victor met her gaze, his dark eyes filled with a deep, magnetic intensity. "I locked those doors because when I looked at you standing beside my table—dirty apron, water pitcher shattered at your feet, fighting for a child you thought was lost forever—I saw the bravest human being I had ever met in my life."
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The cool night air suddenly felt warm.
Victor took a slow step closer to her, his hand reaching out gently, his fingers brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her cheek, his thumb lingering softly near her crescent birthmark.
"Claire," Victor whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "I know I represent a world that brought you unimaginable pain. But I want to spend the rest of my life ensuring that you and Sophie never know fear, want, or sorrow ever again."
Claire looked into his eyes, seeing no longer the cold billionaire who closed companies with a single phone call, but a man who had sacrificed everything to rebuild what his family had broken.
"I don't need your wealth, Victor," Claire whispered back, her hand reaching up to touch his wrist. "I just need you to be the father she deserves."
"I promise you," Victor swore softly, leaning down until his forehead rested against hers. "I promise you on my life."
At that moment, Victor’s encrypted smartphone buzzed in his pocket.
He stepped back reluctantly, pulling out the device. It was a high-priority alert from his chief investigator in New York.
Victor tapped the screen, his expression instantly darkening as he read the message.
"What is it?" Claire asked, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere.
Victor looked up from the screen, his jaw set hard. "Arthur Vance just made a deal with the federal prosecutors in New York. In exchange for a reduced sentence, he surrendered the master ledger of Saint Aurelia Clinic."

Claire’s eyes narrowed. "What ledger?"
"The ledger listing the names of forty other high-net-worth families in America and Europe who bought stolen infants from Dr. Moreau over the last five years," Victor revealed grimly. "And Arthur’s legal team is demanding that you testimony be suppressed in exchange for releasing the names of those forty children."
