Chapter 2 - The Edge of the Abyss

The air at the edge of the canyon tasted like cold copper and ozone.

When Claire Whitmore’s red stiletto lost its grip on the loose white gravel, the silence that followed was far more terrifying than the roar of the waterfall below.

Nathan didn't think. His legs moved before his brain could process the geometry of the drop. He launched himself across the flagstone terrace, slamming his knees onto the sharp stone ledge just as Claire’s fingers slipped from the cliff edge.

“GRAB MY HAND!” Nathan roared.

His fingers locked around Claire’s wrist just in time. The force of her sudden weight pulled him forward, his chest slamming hard against the granite perimeter wall. Below her, spinning wildly in the mountain updrafts, hung Emma Reed.

Emma hadn't let go.

Even as she swung out over a thousand feet of empty air, her arms were locked in a vice grip around Claire’s ankles. The young housekeeper’s lavender uniform was ripped at the shoulder where it had scraped against the rock face, and blood trickled down her pale arm, but her knuckles were white.

"Don't let go!" Claire shrieked, her flawless hair flying wildly across her face, all her aristocratic composure disintegrating into raw, primal terror. "Nathan! Pull me up! Pull me up!"

"I've got you!" Nathan yelled, his arms shaking from the strain. He looked past Claire’s terrified eyes down into the abyss, locking eyes with Emma. "Emma! Hold on!"

"Mr. Cole..." Emma gasped, her voice barely audible over the roaring river below. "The wall... is crumbling!"

She was right. The ledge supporting Nathan’s elbows was fractured stone. Every time he pulled, small showers of dirt and pebbles cascaded down into the void.

Two security guards smashed through the terrace glass doors, followed by Dolores Bennett. Within seconds, four heavy hands grabbed Nathan’s belt and shoulders, dragging all three of them back over the ledge in one agonizing, collective heave.

They spilled onto the flagstones in a tangled heap of silk, leather, and blood.

For a long ten seconds, no one moved. The string quartet had stopped playing long ago. Two hundred wealthy guests stood frozen behind the glass railing, their champagne flutes held mid-air, their faces pale.

Claire was hyperventilating, curled into a ball on the stone floor, sobbing hysterically. "She tried to kill me! Nathan, she tried to push me!"

Nathan sat up, his suit jacket torn, his chest heaving. He looked over at Emma.

Emma was lying on her side, clutching her bleeding shoulder. She wasn't crying. She wasn't screaming. She was staring straight up at the darkening sky, her chest rising and falling in shallow, painful gasps.

"Emma," Nathan breathed, crawling over to her on his knees. "Emma, don't move."

"She..." Emma swallowed, her throat dry as sand. She pointed a trembling, blood-stained finger toward the edge of the cliff. "The... the envelope..."

"Don't listen to her!" Claire shrieked, scrambling to her feet with the help of two guests. Her red dress was ruined, covered in dirt, but her eyes were wide with a fierce, desperate frenzy. "She’s a thief! She was trying to steal from my purse! I caught her, and when I confronted her, she tried to drag me over the edge!"

Dolores Bennett stepped forward, dropping to her knees beside Emma and pressing a clean white napkin against the girl's shoulder.

"Miss Whitmore," Dolores said, her voice dropping into a register colder than the mountain wind. "You might want to stop talking before the police arrive."

"How dare you!" Claire yelled, her voice echoing off the canyon walls. "I am the mistress of this house!"

"You're not the mistress of anything," a calm, clear voice echoed from the terrace doors.

A woman in a sharp navy blazer stepped out onto the patio, holding a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside it was a thick, water-stained manila envelope tied with black string.

It was Detective Sarah Miller from the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department—who had been attending the gala as an off-duty security consultant hired by Nathan’s estate.

"I found this catching on a bush six feet below the ledge," Detective Miller said, looking directly at Claire. "And it doesn't belong to a maid."
