Chapter 7 - The Farmhouse on Sycamore Lane

Spring arrived in the valley with a flood of wild green grass and bright yellow columbine flowers.

The small farmhouse at the base of Silver Ridge smelled of fresh paint, wood wax, and apple blossoms. It had a wraparound porch, a red tin roof, and a view of the mountains that felt soft and welcoming, far removed from the towering stone coldness of the Cole estate up above.

Emma stood on the porch wearing a simple denim apron, holding a tray of freshly potted lavender plants.

A black truck pulled up the gravel driveway, its tires crunching softly.

Nathan stepped out of the driver's seat, wearing a plain gray henley shirt and jeans—a stark contrast to the five-thousand-dollar custom suits he used to wear every day.

"You're late," Emma called out with a warm smile.

"Dolores insisted I inspect the new kitchen staff three times before she’d let me leave," Nathan said, walking up the wooden steps and setting a wooden box of tools on the porch floor. "She’s running the mansion like a military base."

"She loves it," Emma said, setting her plants down. "And so do you."

Nathan sat on the porch step, leaning his back against the railing, looking out over the green pasture where three horses grazed in the afternoon sun.

"I sold the mansion yesterday, Emma," he said quietly.

Emma paused, her hands covered in dark soil. "You sold it?"

"A children's medical foundation bought it," Nathan said, turning his head to look at her. "They're turning it into a summer retreat for pediatric cancer patients. The helipad is being converted into a playground."

Emma walked over and sat down beside him on the wooden step, wiping her dusty hands on a towel.

"How does it feel?" she asked softly.

Nathan took a long, deep breath of the mountain air. For thirteen years, he had carried the weight of his parents' death, the pressure of his billions, and the ghost of his own isolation.

For the first time in his life, his chest didn't feel tight.

"It feels like I finally woke up," Nathan said.

He reached out and took her hand—soil and all—locking his fingers with hers.

"I enrolled in classes for next semester," Emma said, her face glowing with quiet excitement. "Pediatric nursing at Denver University. Classes start in September."

"I know," Nathan smiled. "I spoke to the dean this morning."

Emma narrowed her eyes playful. "Nathan Cole... if you bought that university, I’m moving to Texas."

Nathan laughed—a rich, booming laugh that echoed off the barn walls. "I didn't buy it! I just donated a new scholarship fund in your mother's name. They insisted on giving me a tour."

He leaned in closer, his green eyes fixated on hers, his expression turning serious, tender, and deeply sincere.

"Thank you, Emma," he whispered.

"For what?"

"For catching my wrist on the cliff," Nathan said. "And for not letting me drop."
