CHAPTER 3 — The House That Had No Name on It

Wendell did not go to his board meeting.

Instead, he did something he had not done in years.

He changed direction without a business reason.

Pine Hollow was not on any of his maps in a meaningful way.

No corporate value.

No development interest.

No future projections.

Just a bend in the road society forgot to update.

And yet, Wendell found himself driving back.

Not because he needed to.

Because he wanted to understand something he couldn’t quantify.

He found Jaylen sitting on the steps of a small house made of weather-worn wood and patched metal roofing.

The same grocery bag was beside him.

Inside it: bread, canned beans, and a bottle of cheap oil.

A younger girl sat inside the doorway watching him—maybe seven years old.

His sister.

“Did you come back for your money?” Jaylen asked when he saw Wendell.

“No,” Wendell said.

A pause.

Then: “I came back for you.”

That made Jaylen look up properly for the first time.

Inside the house, there was no air conditioning.

Only heat and the hum of a struggling fan.

The walls were lined with improvised tools—repaired radios, broken electronics, dismantled car parts.

Jaylen had not just learned mechanics.

He had built a survival language out of broken systems.

“You fixed my SUV in eight minutes,” Wendell said.

Jaylen nodded.

“It was already almost fixed. It just didn’t know it.”

Wendell sat down slowly.

“You know what that car costs?”

Jaylen shrugged.

“Too much.”

That almost made Wendell laugh.

Almost.

Wendell looked around.

“This is where you work?”

“I don’t work,” Jaylen said. “I fix things so they don’t stay broken.”

A silence.

Then Wendell asked:

“Why?”

Jaylen finally hesitated.

Because that question mattered more than tools.

“Because if things stay broken,” he said, “people stop trying.”

That night, Wendell left.

But he didn’t leave the same way he came.

He left with a decision forming quietly in his mind.

Not corporate.

Not logical.

Not approved.

May you like

Something worse.

Something human.
