CHAPTER 4 — The Offer No One Understood

Three days later, Wendell returned.
This time with a black SUV, two assistants, and a folder.
Jaylen did not look impressed.
“Are you lost again?” he asked.
Wendell smiled slightly.
“No. I came with an offer.”
Jaylen frowned.
“I don’t buy things.”
“I’m not selling you anything,” Wendell said.
He handed over the folder.
Inside: education sponsorship, technical training, equipment funding, and a full scholarship path through a private engineering program.
Jaylen read none of it quickly.
Then closed it.
“I can’t leave,” he said.
Wendell paused.
“Because of your family?”
Jaylen looked toward the house.
“My sister.”
That was it.
Not more explanation.
Not drama.
Just responsibility.
Wendell looked at the house again.
Then at the boy.
Then made another decision.
“What if I didn’t take you away?” he asked.
Jaylen frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Wendell gestured behind him.
“I build infrastructure companies. Logistics. Energy. Systems.”
A pause.
“I could bring resources here. Training. Tools. A real workshop. You wouldn’t have to leave.”
Jaylen studied him carefully.
“Why?”
Wendell didn’t answer immediately.
Because the real answer was new even to him.
“Because I think the world wastes people like you,” he finally said.
Jaylen didn’t respond right away.
May you like
Then:
“I don’t want to be wasted.”
