Chapter 4 - The Breach

"Stay behind me, Claire," Miles commanded softly, his voice dead calm despite the adrenaline surging through his veins.

He didn't need light to navigate the small apartment now; he had memorized every inch of it over the last four days. He moved swiftly into the nursery, picking up Julian in his left arm while Claire rushed in to scoop Ivy into her arms. The children were frightened, sobbing against their parents' necks as the apartment plunged into total shadow.

"They cut the power to the whole floor," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Miles, is this Sterling?"

"He's getting aggressive because I haven't resurfaced," Miles said, stepping toward the heavy wooden door of the apartment. "He wants to find out where I am, pressure me, or create a scandal before the board vote on Friday. Marcus!" Miles called out into the dark hallway.

From the stairwell, a tall, shadowy figure stepped forward. It was Marcus Vance, impeccably dressed despite the blacked-out hallway, holding a suppressed tactical flashlight.

"Clear, Mr. Harrington," Marcus reported calmly. "My men handled the two intruders in the alley. They were private investigators hired by Sterling’s legal firm. They traced your burner phone when you bought that coffee downstairs this afternoon."

Claire let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding, slumping against the doorframe. "In my home... they came to my home with my children inside."

Miles’s entire body went rigid with rage. It was one thing for Carter Sterling to play financial games in Wall Street skyscrapers; it was another entirely to threaten the safety of Claire, Julian, and Ivy.

He turned to Marcus. "Is the armored SUV waiting?"

"Around the corner, sir. Fully secure."

Miles looked at Claire. Her eyes were wide with a mix of fear and betrayal. She was looking at him as if he had brought the monster to her doorstep.

"Claire, look at me," Miles pleaded gently, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that my world has invaded yours, and that you were safer without me. But Sterling knows about the children now. He was searching for my leverage. If you stay here, you aren't safe. Please. Trust me for one night."

Claire looked at Julian, who was clinging to Miles’s sweater, his small fingers clutched in the wool as if Miles were a human shield. Julian wasn't afraid of Miles anymore; he was looking to his father for protection.

Claire swallowed hard and nodded. "Where are we going?"

"Somewhere no one can touch us," Miles said. "The Harrington Estate in upstate New York. It's built like a fortress."

Twenty minutes later, under the cover of pitch darkness, the armored vehicle glided silently onto the Long Island Expressway, carrying the broken family away from Queens. Inside the spacious back seat, Ivy and Julian had finally fallen back asleep, lulled by the gentle hum of the heavy engine.

Claire sat near the window, staring out at the blurred streetlights. Miles reached out and gently covered her cold hand with his own. This time, she didn't pull away.

"I won't let him hurt you, Claire," Miles promised, his voice low and intense. "I let my company take away my happiness once. I let my mother and Sterling manipulate my life. It will never happen again."

"What are you going to do?" Claire asked softly.

"I'm going to take back my company," Miles said, his eyes burning with cold determination. "And then I'm going to destroy Carter Sterling."
