Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

"Good evening," Sarah Jenkins began, looking directly into the camera. "We are coming to you live from the Harrington Estate in Bedford, New York. Tonight, we are joined by Miles Harrington, founder and CEO of Harrington Urban Design, who vanished four days ago amidst rumors of corporate turmoil."

Miles sat up straight, his face calm, authoritative, and impossibly handsome under the studio lights. He did not look like a man in crisis; he looked like a titan ready to reclaim his domain.

"Thank you, Sarah," Miles said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the airwaves. "I know there has been widespread speculation regarding my sudden absence. Today, I am here to clear the air—not just for my shareholders, but for the public."

"Mr. Harrington, your board of directors is preparing to vote you out tomorrow morning," Sarah noted. "Reports suggest you abandoned your post during a crucial negotiation."

"I didn't abandon my post, Sarah," Miles said clearly. "I stepped away to attend to the most important matter of my life. On New Year's Eve, I was reunited with Claire Moore, the woman I love, and discovered that I am the father of seventeen-month-old twins—Julian and Ivy."

A collective gasp echoed through newsrooms across the nation as the screen displayed a sweet, candid photograph taken that morning of Miles holding Julian and Ivy in the estate library.

"For the past two years," Miles continued, his gray eyes locking onto the camera, "I allowed my work to define my existence. I built towers of glass and steel, believing that productivity was the measure of a man's worth. But while I was building those towers, a predatory competitor—Carter Sterling of Sterling Enterprises—was actively sabotaging my personal life, bribing my staff, and hiding my family from me to force a hostile takeover."

The broadcast immediately switched to graphics displaying the bank transfers and Rebecca's signed confession.

"Tomorrow morning at nine AM," Miles said, his voice ringing like a iron bell, "I will be attending the board meeting at Harrington Urban Design. I will not be stepping down. Instead, I will be presenting a criminal complaint filed with the Southern District of New York against Carter Sterling for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and harassment."

Miles reached over and took Claire’s hand, lifting it into the camera frame.

"Harrington Urban Design was built on the foundation of legacy, family, and structural integrity. Starting today, I am returning to lead this company with a new vision—one that values the human life inside those buildings as much as the steel that holds them up. To Carter Sterling, I have only one message: See you in court."

The interview ended. The studio crew burst into spontaneous applause.

Miles stood up and immediately pulled Claire into a fierce, deep hug, burying his face in her hair. "We did it," he whispered.

Over by the doorway, Victoria Harrington stood alone, watching her son hold the woman he loved. Tear trickled down the older woman's face. For thirty years, she had tried to mold Miles into a cold, untouchable monument. But seeing him now, vibrant, powerful, and deeply human, she finally understood how wrong she had been.

"Miles," Victoria said softly, stepping forward.

Miles turned to face her, his arm still wrapped securely around Claire’s waist.

"I am... so sorry," Victoria choked out, her pride finally shattering. "Can I... may I see my grandchildren?"

Claire looked at Miles, then looked at the frail, lonely woman standing before them. Claire took a deep breath, forgiving the past for the sake of the future.

"They're upstairs, Victoria," Claire said gently. "They love listening to stories before bed."
