Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Estate

The legal proceedings moved with the terrifying speed of a well-oiled machine, fueled by Sarah Sterling’s relentless efficiency and the absolute lack of financial defense on Daniel’s side.

By Friday of the following week, a judge granted temporary exclusive occupancy of the Richmond estate to me and the children, alongside a formal protective order keeping Melissa at least 500 feet away from us at all times.

With the children safely staying with me in our restored sanctuary, the moving trucks arrived to pack up Daniel’s personal belongings. He had temporarily relocated to a modest one-bedroom apartment near his engineering firm—an apartment he had to pay for entirely out of his own salary, without my accounts to subsidize his life.

Standing on the front porch, watching the movers carry Daniel’s wardrobe boxes down the stone steps, I felt a profound sense of lightness wash over me. The air smelled of crisp autumn leaves and fresh rain.

Patricia tried to call me twice, but I blocked her number permanently. Melissa sent a furious, unhinged email about ruined credit and unfairness, which I forwarded straight to Sarah, who replied with a cheerful note: Let her keep typing. Every message is another exhibit of harassment.

Daniel walked up the steps alone, holding a final box containing his college memorabilia and family photos. He stopped near the front door, looking around the pristine foyer with a look of profound regret.

"The house feels empty without you and the kids," Daniel murmured quietly.

"It was never empty, Daniel," I replied, standing tall with my arms crossed over my chest. "It was just crowded with people who didn't appreciate the roof over their heads."

He nodded slowly, accepting the finality in my voice. He turned and walked down the steps toward his car, disappearing into the Richmond traffic. I closed the front door, locked the deadbolt, and listened to the satisfying click of absolute security.
