Chapter 8 - Building Anew

The following weeks were marked by quiet healing and rebuilding.

Without the crushing weight of funding two ungrateful adult dependents, my bank accounts stabilized with staggering surplus. More importantly, the emotional atmosphere inside our home transformed entirely. Lily and Leo laughed more easily, slept through the night without waking from nightmares about fighting adults, and eagerly helped me plant new winter flowers in the front garden beds.

Daniel and I entered formal mediation regarding custody and asset division. Recognizing that Sarah Sterling had documented every single financial transfer, hidden debt, and instance of domestic enablement, Daniel’s court-appointed attorney advised him not to contest the pre-marital status of the house or my primary custody of the children.

We settled the divorce terms by mid-November: sole ownership of the Richmond estate remained firmly with me, joint legal custody was established with primary physical custody awarded to my household, and Daniel was ordered to pay child support scaled strictly to his independent income—with zero spousal support awarded, given my independent corporate salary.

On the day the final decree was signed by the family court judge, I took Lily and Leo out for celebratory milkshakes at our favorite downtown diner.

"Mom," Leo asked as he bit into a burger, "does Dad have to pay for Aunt Melissa’s car anymore?"

I smiled, wiping a stray drop of milkshake from his chin. "No, buddy. Aunt Melissa has to pay for her own life now."

"Good," Lily chimed in wisely. "She was always mean anyway."

I couldn't argue with her.
