Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Lauren spun around, dropping her hood.
Her face was pale, her dark hair tangled, her eyes wide with initial shock. But within seconds, the shock vanished, replaced by that familiar, chillingly calm mask she had worn for months.
"Michael," she said softly, stepping back toward the patio door. "You shouldn't be here."
"Neither should you," Michael said, slowly walking down the stairs, one step at a time.
Behind him, Miss Ruth appeared at the landing. From the kitchen and hallway doors, Detective Vance and three tactical officers stepped out, their sidearms raised and pointed directly at her chest.
"Chicago Police! Freeze! Hands where we can see them!" Vance ordered.
Lauren looked around the room, assessing her options like a cornered viper. She didn't panic. She didn't drop to her knees. Instead, a slow, bitter smile spread across her red lips.
"So," Lauren sneered, looking up at Michael. "The stupid, grieving husband finally woke up. I must admit, I underestimated the old nanny. I should have dealt with her first."
Miss Ruth’s eyes narrowed, but she didn't say a word.
"You tried to kill my son," Michael said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound disgust. "You broke his arm. You injected poison under his cast. You tried to drive him insane."
"Oh, please," Lauren scoffed, crossing her arms casually despite the laser sights focused on her body. "I didn't try to kill him. If I wanted him dead, he’d be six feet under already. I just needed him out of the way. He was an annoying, noisy little parasite who stood between me and five million dollars."
"He is a ten-year-old child!" Michael shouted, his composure snapping as he took a step forward. "He trusted you! I trusted you!"
"You were desperate, Michael," Lauren mocked, her voice dripping with venom. "You were so lonely, so pitiful, so eager for a pretty face to dress up your dead wife's house that you believed every single word I said. You practically handed him to me on a silver platter! You called him crazy yourself! Remember that? 'If you slam that cast into the wall one more time, Ethan, you're not coming back to this house!'"
She mimicked Michael’s angry voice perfectly.
The words struck Michael like a physical blow. He flinched, the guilt burning through his chest like fire.
"Yes," Michael whispered, tears of anger shining in his eyes. "I said that. And I will spend the rest of my life making it up to my son. But you... you will spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell."
Lauren scoffed, reaching slowly toward her jacket pocket. "I don't think so—"
"DON'T MOVE!" Detective Vance barked, stepping forward.
Before Lauren could draw whatever she was reaching for, Miss Ruth moved with astonishing speed. She grabbed a heavy brass umbrella stand from beside the coat rack and swung it with all her weight directly into Lauren’s ribs.
CRACK.
"Ahgh!" Lauren shrieked, collapsing onto the hardwood floor, gasping for air as the breath was knocked completely out of her lungs. A small, snub-nosed revolver slid out of her pocket and rolled across the floor.
Detective Vance instantly lunged, kicking the gun away and slamming Lauren face-down onto the floor, pulling her arms behind her back with a sharp click of handcuffs.
"Lauren Vance," Detective Vance growled in her ear, "you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, identity theft, and grand larceny."
Lauren’s face was pressed against the floor, her immaculate mask finally shattered, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred as she stared up at Miss Ruth.
"You miserable old bitch..." Lauren gasped.

Miss Ruth stood over her, holding the heavy brass umbrella stand, looking down at her with complete, unshakeable dignity.
"You called me just a nanny," Miss Ruth said quietly. "But a nanny protects her family. Take her away."
