Chapter 8 - The Birth of Evelyn

The next three hours were a blur of sweat, firelight, and sheer human perseverance.
I built up the fire in the bedroom hearth until the room was warm and cozy. I boiled water on the gas stove downstairs, gathered every clean towel and sheet in the house, and set up a sterile environment beside the bed using the emergency medical supplies Michael had left in my kit weeks ago.
I held Claire’s hand through every agonizing contraction. I rubbed her lower back, wiped the sweat from her forehead with cool damp cloths, and sang the soft acoustic lullabies she used to play on her piano years ago.
"You’re doing amazing, Claire," I whispered into her ear as she screamed through a massive contraction that shook her entire body. "She’s right there, sweetheart! I can see her hair! One more push!"
"I can't, Daniel!" Claire sobbed, her strength completely depleted, her head falling back against the pillows. "I’m too tired! I can't do it!"
I leaned down, placing my hands on either side of her face, bringing my lips inches from hers.
"Yes, you can," I demanded gently, tears shining in my own eyes. "You are the strongest woman I have ever known in my life. You survived my arrogance, you saved my empire, and you built a home out of nothing. You can do this, Claire! Give me our daughter!"
Claire let out a primal, fierce roar of pure maternal power, throwing her whole body into one final, heroic push.
I dropped to my knees at the foot of the bed, my hands reaching out, perfectly positioned.
At 3:42 AM, as the blizzard raged violently against the windowpanes outside, a tiny, wet, perfect little bundle slipped into my waiting hands.
The room went deathly silent for two terrifying seconds.
I quickly cleared the tiny baby’s nose and mouth with a sterile bulb syringe, wrapped her in a warm flannel towel, and gently rubbed her tiny back.
WAAAAAH!
A sharp, high-pitched, magnificent cry erupted from the baby’s lungs, echoing through the warm bedroom like the sweetest symphony ever composed.
I let out a ragged, sob of pure, unadulterated joy, holding the tiny crying infant against my chest. She was covered in soft dark hair, her tiny fingers clutching frantically at the air, her skin glowing pink and healthy.
"She’s here, Claire," I wept, stepping up beside the bed and gently laying the newborn baby directly onto Claire’s bare chest. "She’s here. Look at her."
Claire gathered the crying infant into her arms, weeping uncontrollably as she pressed her lips against the baby’s soft, warm head. "Evelyn... my sweet baby girl... my beautiful Evelyn..."

The tiny baby instantly stopped crying the moment she felt her mother’s warmth, settling down against Claire’s chest, her tiny dark eyes blinking open for the very first time.
I collapsed onto the edge of the bed beside them, wrapping my heavy arms around both of my girls, resting my forehead against Claire’s wet cheek as the firelight danced across our newly completed family.
