Chapter 9 - The First Morning

By 8:00 AM, the blizzard had finally broken.
Brilliant, dazzling sunlight broke through the winter clouds, reflecting off three feet of fresh white snow that blanketed the peaceful Wisconsin landscape.
The bedroom was quiet, filled only with the soft, steady breathing of Claire and baby Evelyn sleeping peacefully under a mountain of warm fleece blankets. Evelyn was tucked safely in the crook of Claire’s arm, her tiny pink fist resting against her mother’s chest.
I stood near the window, wearing a clean shirt, looking out at the glittering white forest.
I held a warm mug of coffee in my hand, feeling an overwhelming, profound sense of peace that I had never experienced in my forty years on this earth. The noise of Chicago, the endless struggle for power, the paranoia, the greed—all of it seemed like a distant, meaningless nightmare from another lifetime.
A soft rustle of sheets came from the bed.
I turned around. Claire was awake, rubbing her eyes sleepily, looking down at Evelyn with a look of pure, adoration.
I walked over to the bed, setting my coffee mug on the nightstand, and sat down gently on the edge of the mattress.
"How are you feeling?" I asked softly, reaching out to gently smooth a dark lock of hair from her forehead.
"Exhausted," Claire smiled weakly, her voice raspy. "Every muscle in my body aches. But... I have never been happier in my entire life."
She looked up at me, her brown eyes soft, clear, and shining with an emotion that made my chest swell.
"You were incredible last night, Daniel," she whispered gently, reaching out her free hand to take mine. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"You did all the work, sweetheart," I replied, bringing her hand to my lips and pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles. "I just caught her."
Claire looked down at sleeping Evelyn, then back at me.
"When I left the penthouse that night at two in the morning," Claire said softly, "I believed with every fiber of my soul that you were incapable of changing. I thought the man I married was completely gone, replaced by the monster your empire created."
I lowered my gaze, feeling that familiar sting of old guilt.
"But over these last two months," Claire continued, her voice trembling slightly with emotion, "you showed me that the man I fell in love with twenty years ago was still inside there, waiting to come back. You chose us, Daniel. You chose our daughter over everything else."
I looked up, meeting her eyes, tears shining in mine. "I will choose you every single day for the rest of my life, Claire. I swear it to you."
Claire smiled, a tear trilling down her cheek, and shifted slightly on the pillows, opening her arm toward me.

"Then stop standing by the window," she whispered tenderly. "Come lay down with your family."
I took off my boots, climbed onto the bed beside her, and pulled her and Evelyn close against my chest. We lay together under the warm blankets as the morning sun flooded the room with brilliant white light.
