Chapter 10 - The Last Ledger

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon. The house was bathed in golden sunlight filtering through the soaring arched windows of the library.
I sat behind my mahogany desk, reviewing the final portfolio ledger for the fiscal quarter. The numbers were staggering—record profits across all shipping lanes, zero debt, and an unbreakable corporate governance structure.
The heavy mahogany door opened without knocking—a privilege reserved for exactly one person in this world.
Hunter walked in, holding a giggling, ten-month-old Leo on her hip. He had grown strong, his cheeks rosy, his little hands reaching out to grab the fountain pen resting on my desk.
"Are you ever going to close that book, Lorenzo?" Hunter asked, a playful smile touching her lips as she leaned against the edge of the desk.
I looked up from the ledger, my eyes taking in the two of them—the woman who had walked out of the grief of losing a child and into a burning house to save mine, and the little boy who represented everything I fought to protect.
I closed the leather-bound ledger with a satisfying, decisive thud.
"The ledger is closed for the day," I said, standing up from my chair and walking around the desk.
I reached out, lifting Leo into my arms while wrapping my other arm around Hunter’s waist, pulling them both close against my chest.
I had spent years building an empire of power, fear, and steel, believing that walls and weapons were the only things that kept a man safe. But standing there in the warm, sunlit quiet of my home, holding the only two people who truly mattered, I finally understood the ultimate truth.
