Chapter 7 - The New Order

Three weeks later, the atmosphere inside the Rossi estate had undergone a miraculous transformation.

The dark, cold mausoleum that my home had become after Sophia’s death was finally filled with warmth, the soft cooing of a healthy infant, and the sound of life returning to the halls.

Richard Vance was awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary with no bail, his corporate shares legally stripped and absorbed back into my primary holding trust. Brenda Vance and her co-conspirators were serving time for attempted murder and conspiracy.

And Hunter Higgins was no longer wearing a housekeeper’s uniform.

We had transitioned her role into that of primary guardian and executive estate director. She moved into the master suite adjacent to the nursery, not as a servant, but as an equal partner in the survival and stewardship of my household.

It started with late-night conversations over black coffee in the expansive kitchen while Leo slept peacefully upstairs. We talked about grief—about the daughters we had both lost, the ghosts that haunted the corridors of our minds, and the strange, unexpected ways fate weaves broken lives together.

One evening, as the autumn rain beat softly against the kitchen windows, Hunter looked across the marble island at me, a quiet amusement in her eyes.

"You know, Mr. Rossi," she said, leaning against the counter. "When you pointed that gun at me in the nursery, I thought I was about to die."

I smiled, setting my coffee cup down. "And when I realized what you were doing, I realized how close I came to making the biggest mistake of my life."

"You don't make mistakes easily," she teased gently.

"Only once in a while," I admitted, walking closer to her. "And I spend the rest of my life fixing them."
