Chapter 10 - The Broken Crumb

The alliance between Dante’s old loyalists and his new reality was uneasy at best. Within forty-eight hours, the quiet backyard was no longer quiet. Two discreet black SUVs were parked under the oak trees, and men in dark suits—men Mara recognized from her worst nightmares during her early days with Dante—stood guard at the edge of the property.
Lena was confused and frightened. She spent most of her time in her room, the vibrant energy she usually possessed dampened by the heavy atmosphere hanging over the house. Mara tried to comfort her, baking her favorite chocolate chip cookies, but even the sweet scent couldn't mask the metallic tang of fear in the air.
"Why are those men outside, Mommy Mara?" Lena asked one evening, hugging a stuffed bear tightly against her chest. "Are they bad guys?"
Mara sat on the edge of the bed, smoothing Lena’s hair. "No, sweetie. They are friends of Dante’s. They’re just here to make sure our house stays safe while we fix a big misunderstanding. You don't need to worry."
"Dante looks angry," Lena whispered. "Like he used to look before we came here."
Mara’s heart broke. They had worked so hard to strip that look from Dante’s face, to replace the cold calculus of survival with genuine joy. Now, Luciana Moretti was dragging him back into the dark.
Later that night, Mara found Dante in the study, staring at a map of the city’s shipping docks. A glass of scotch sat untouched on the desk.
"We need to leave, Dante," Mara said, closing the door behind her. "We can pack up the bakery, find another town, another state. We did it once, we can do it again."
"No," Dante said, his voice hollow. "Luciana has resources I didn't account for. She tracked us here within months. If we run, we spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders. Lena will grow up thinking every stranger is an assassin. I won't give her that life, Mara. I won't give you that life."
"So what’s the alternative? You go back to being a monster?" Mara challenged, stepping closer. "You go back to killing?"
Dante looked up, his eyes bloodshot, filled with a deep, agonizing pain. "If it keeps you and Lena alive, I will burn the whole city to the ground, Mara. I will become whatever monster I need to be."
Mara grabbed his face with both hands, forcing him to look at her. "No. You don't get to slide back into the dark so easily. We are a family now. We fight this together, but we do it on our terms. Not Luciana’s. We don't use their rules."

"She threatened our daughter, Mara!" Dante shouted, his composure breaking for a fraction of a second. He gripped her wrists, not hurting her, but desperate for her to understand. "There are no rules in a blood feud."
Before Mara could reply, the house’s alarm system shrieked—a high-pitched, piercing wail that shattered the nighttime silence. Simultaneously, the sound of gunfire erupted from the front yard.
