Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Moretti Empire

The peace was fragile, and it shattered exactly two weeks later.

Dante hadn't left the house in days, a sign that something was brewing in the underworld he inhabited. Men in dark suits were constantly in and out of the study. The atmosphere in the penthouse turned from sterile to claustrophobic.

Mara was in the middle of teaching Lena how to whisk eggs when the sirens started—a distant, wailing sound that grew louder and more frantic.

Dante burst into the kitchen, his face a mask of cold fury. “We’re leaving. Now.”

“What’s happening?” Mara asked, pulling Lena away from the counter.

“An ambush,” Dante said, his voice clipped. “Someone leaked my location. Mara, get her to the safe room. You know the code.”

He didn't wait for an answer. He turned and sprinted toward the main entrance, his gun drawn.

Mara grabbed Lena, who was shaking violently. The girl’s eyes were wide, the trauma of the past bubbling to the surface. “Lena, look at me,” Mara said, her voice firm. “We are playing a game. A secret game. We need to go to the pantry, behind the shelves. Do you remember?”

Lena nodded, her breathing shallow.

Mara raced toward the hidden entrance behind the heavy custom pantry, just as the penthouse front door was blown off its hinges. The sound was deafening—a concussive blast that knocked Mara to her knees.

She pushed Lena inside the small, reinforced steel room and scrambled in after her, pulling the heavy door shut. It clicked into place, plunging them into darkness.

“It’s okay,” Mara whispered, holding Lena tight. “He’s coming back. He’s the strongest person I know, and he’s coming back for us.”

Through the internal security monitor inside the safe room, they watched the massacre unfold. Mara gasped as she saw Dante fighting his way through the living room, his movements precise and lethal. He wasn't a businessman tonight; he was a warrior defending his territory.

Lena was watching the screen, her face pale. She saw her father take a graze to the shoulder, and a small, muffled sound—a whimper—escaped her.

Mara turned the screen off. “Don't watch. Close your eyes and think about the cinnamon rolls. Think about the flour.”

She started talking, rambling about the recipe, about the different types of sugar, about the way a kitchen feels when it’s full of warmth. She talked for an hour, for two hours, until the shouting outside stopped and the house returned to an eerie, unnatural silence.

Then, the safe room door opened.

Dante stood there, his clothes torn, blood dripping from his shoulder. He looked like he had been through hell and walked out the other side.

Lena let go of Mara and ran to him. Dante caught her, burying his face in her hair. He looked at Mara, his eyes glassy.

“You saved her,” he whispered.

“You came back,” Mara replied, her voice shaky.

Dante pulled away, his expression hardening again. “This house is no longer safe. Pack your things. We are going to the island.”
