Chapter 9 - The Farewell

On a quiet, crisp morning in late January, the snow fell softly outside the master bedroom windows.
The house was completely peaceful.
Margaret Hart lay in her bed, her breathing slow, shallow, and light as a feather. She was surrounded by the people she loved. William sat on her right, holding her right hand in both of his. Clara sat on her left, gently stroking her forehead with a damp cloth. Mia sat at the foot of the bed, holding the chipped blue teacup, her small face quiet and peaceful.
Dr. Vance’s replacement—a kind, elderly woman named Dr. Chen, who had been vetted personally by William—stood quietly near the door, having just checked Margaret’s vital signs. She gave William a gentle, silent nod.
It was time.
Margaret slowly opened her eyes. They were clear, free of pain, filled with an extraordinary, peaceful light. She looked at Mia first.
"Be a good girl, little robin," Margaret whispered, her voice thin as silk.
Mia nodded bravely, a tear tracing down her cheek. "I will, Grandma Margaret."
Margaret turned her head to Clara. "Thank you, my dear... for bringing my boy back to me."
"I love you, Margaret," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.
Finally, Margaret turned her eyes to William. She looked at his face—no longer scarred by cold ambition, but soft, open, and filled with love.
"William," she whispered.
"I’m here, Mother," William said, leaning down, pressing his forehead against her trembling hand. "I’m right here."
"I am so proud of you," Margaret said clearly, her final words floating through the warm, sunlit room like a blessing. "You built a beautiful home."
She let out a long, quiet breath. Her hand went soft in William’s grip.
The room remained still. Outside, the cherry blossom branches swayed gently under the weight of the soft winter snow.

There were no frantic calls, no blaring monitors, no emergency teams rushing into the room. There was only the quiet, dignified departure of a woman who had lived to see her son saved, surrounded by the warmth of a family that love had built from the ashes of neglect.
William closed his eyes, holding his mother’s hand against his heart, letting his tears fall freely onto the white linens, at peace.
